JDM B18c + boost
I can't believe I'm asking a question like this but.... here goes...
How well will a completely stock JDM b18c (itr engine) do on boost with a small turbo (t3 or t3/t4) if running on 91 octane limit ?
All the proper precautions will be taken regarding fueling, ignition, management, tuning, oil control, new cooling parts and so on, but the engine will be used and all OEM. The other option is a stock b16 but the deal on the b18c is good enough to consider.
This setup will run the car while I build a b18c1 so don't need any encouragement regarding maximizing the engine in question. Just looking for some moderately powered reliability for a few months and want input on the stock jdm motor on boost as I have never run the jdm b18 before...

no will know, its hit or miss. if the engine is healthy it can last quite a while
isnt there thread around where people have bone stock motor with boost?

The safe limit for a stock internal B series like yours is around ~350-375whp depending on your fuel choice. With 91 octane, I would shoot for 325-340whp tops. As long as its tuned correctly and maintained, there's no reason a stock motor can't last for years at those power levels. I ran my stock internal GSR at 315/216 for 2 years (10,5psi - GT3255b on 91) and it never had issues.

Re: JDM B18c + boost
It wiil be fine to boost just like any other stock B series and with the higher compression you will make more power on less boost. High compression booster cars are really fun.

Re: JDM B18c + boost
I'm not looking to make as much as 300 on the stock block... but the car will see lots of hills, mountain roads, high humidity and high ambient temps hence my concern with the stock, higher compression itr engine. Just concerned with the jdm itr compression and the lower octane gas I'm using. Over a decade working on hondas and honestly I've been running a built block in one configuration or another for most of that time. Melted a few oem pistons early in the game and didn't really look back. :-P
Will look up the race bum build.

Re: JDM B18c + boost
This may not be totally relevant but I have a stock '96 JDM B18C Type-R with a Garrett GT2860RS on it running minimal boost, about 7 lbs or so. So far so good. It's much quicker than it was, especially lower in the rpm range. My IAT is about 102 just cruising around and gets to low 120's when I have my foot in it. However, it's in a Morris Mini. At 1600 lbs the engine barely knows it's in a car. Of course, the Mini can barely be called a car.
I use readily available 93 octane and the car is a daily driver that can get 39-41 mpg if I let it.

Re: JDM B18c + boost
The car isn't cosmetically presentable yet...meaning I need to paint it. The fiberglass flip front end is still in primer. I'm thinking of going flat black. I've seen some flat black street rods in the area and they look a lot better in person than they do in a picture. I think it would look good with the stainless trim. I really am afraid to add up how much I have in it but nothing was cheap. I have Wilwood 4 piston brakes up front, coil over Afco shocks all around and a Housman 3.47 final drive. The next set of tires I'm going to have to change to Toyo Proxes DOT 225/45-13 track tires. 13" tires are just getting impossible to find.
I'd like to re-gear the transmission to better suit the car. Mostly I'm after a longer 1st. This would be the last mechanical change on my list. Everything else is cosmetic; expensive but cosmetic.
