Default Ignition tuning??

this is not on a Honda, but FI related none the less...I'm kinda confused on tuning ignition timing, this is on a Greddy Emanage....you enter the amount of advance or retard timing on the table(ie- you wanna advance 1* @ 3000rpm and 5psi...you put a 1 in the correspoding box, etc.)

so far the fuel side tuning has been a cinch, so no trouble there... but I'm a newb to ignition tuning. whats the best method to go into this? we have an MSD knock meter at our disposal....would best bet be to disconnect the stock knock sensor and use the MSD(after calibrating it) in its place so we can listen for audible knock? I'd really like some pointers from anyone whos done this before, itd be much appreciated...car is a 99.5 turbo Maxima VQ30DE with 8.2:1 CR, the low CR is a little reassuring so it might take longer for me to blow it up I guess, LOL! *knock on wood* the closest thing of info I could dig up was here on EFI101s forum http://www.efi101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7 and what I'm getting from that is that its basically a trial and error affair?? advance until you hear knock than back out? Thanks for any input
