Default Uberdata ignition tuning

I found very few answers on my search.

Anyone knows how to street tune ignition advance/retard?

I'm wondering if uberdata can tap the knock sensor to detect detonation.

I will install an EGT sensor if this will be useful for tuning ignition.

Help?

The Honda knock sensor will do very little to help you here. Most people subscribe to the stepped retard method, i'm sure you've read about that. I don't think there is a very good way on the street, but you can always read the plugs after a few runs and of course listen for pings. If you pickup on some pinging, back the timing off a bit.

Well, if you don't want to read the plugs or listen for knock like I suggested, then I guess you could just set it using a wild *** guess and hope for the best. Would you like a wild *** guess?

1. Read the Plugs
2. Get a knock monitor
3. Dyno

Those are your options. There's no more to say. Keep asking for help all you want, you'll only get variants of these 3 options as answers.

So I cannot make use of the EGT to tune? WHy do people install EGT sensor then?

OK fine, there's a 4th one. but that is all!

listen to Mad Cow though - if there was an easier way to tune timing we all would have heard it by now. the problem with an EGT meter is the slow response that most if not all of them have.

Just go get the step-retard code and put it into uberdata. That is your best bet for now.

Thanks for all the replies, guys, I appreciate it.

So can someone explain to me how to tune ignition, having some information from EGT sensor? This is the info I cannot find.

I still don't understand why we cannot tap into the knock sensor of the factory in the ECU, though.

I saw step-retard procedure in a thread somewhere, but could not find my way back to it. Anyone knows a tutorial on this?

download the step retard script and place it in your uberdata folder. Then remove the old script for the boost tab. I forget what its called.

The stock honda knock sensor alone won't be good enuff.

If you do not feel confident in tuning your setup after reading the ubberdata forums etc, you should have some one who has experience tune your vehicle.

Good Luck.

basically, if the temp is too hot, you're either too retarded or too advanced.

the factory knock sensor becomes extremely inaccurate during higher RPM's, especially once VTEC is activated.

Is it worth it to spend additionally $$$ to install the EGT sensor?
What's the "normal temperature range" for each boost pressure? or maybe this is not a question that has definite answer?

Sure as a safety measure/warning device.

There are different versions with the retard function. One version already has the step retard built in, older versions have the linear retard (1 degree per psi).

Which one would be the one with better retard function? 1.70?

There are different 1.7 versions floating around one with step another older version with linear retard. Step retard is better because at lower boost you dont need to pull timing back a full degree, maybe just 0.25-0.5 of timing at lower booost levels (1-4), and as the boost gets higher the amount of timing being pulled increases slightly. For more details on step retard check out the uberforums..

Uberdata forum is still down

Do you mind if you email me your version of uberdata that has the latest step retard function?

It's as dependent on the distance from the exhaust ports as anything. After you install it you have to pay attention to how it reads on YOUR engine, and tune from there. I wouldn't even consider EGT readings comparable between vehicles unless the chamber distance and everything else - mani, turbo, downpipe, etc - is identical.

The only versions of UD that hae the step retard already built in are the Ost2, 1.7LE and 1.8 version. Maybe somebody else can send you the script you need.

I've heard of someone doing DIY knock sensor tapping from the factory knock. Here is the link
