Default ideas for new turbo on b16

Hallo,

maybe my turbo is blown and i'am searching for a new one because i also want to make a little power upgrade.
actualy i have a totaly stock B16A1 Engine but the next one which will be completely build is allready
in the garage.

my future goals are about 400-470 WHP (not with the stock block, but with the next one when i have saved money)
therefor i'am searching a turbo that is good for this amount of hp.

my second goal is daily driving the car with a good spool up (nothing in the 6k range, if it spools from 3,5k-4k
it would be fine)

here is my current list, maybe some of you can make a ranking of possible HP and spool up time for these
(or other) Turbos:

GT2871R
GT25/40R
GT3071R
GT30R

redline will be at 8000rpm, maybe a few hundret more when money for the head is available.

if someone has other Turbos that fits for my application, i'am open for new ideas.
maybe some non BB Turbos?! how much is the difference?

Thanks
Malte.

2871 and 3071 are a bit small for that WHP, I make 408 with a GT3071R, but that's about all it's gonna do. I'd do a GT35R if I was shooting for 470.

sounds a lot like my goals... I went with an SC44E turbo. I'll let you know what it does on the dyno in about two weeks.

I would definately say get an sc61 or gt35r if youre trying to make over 400whp.

Do you realy think it needs a GT35? because i think i get space problems with such a buge turbo in my crx ;-) especialy because i have a bigger radiator... i think from the outer dimensoins a T30R is the biggest possible...

how much is the GT3071 smaller then the GT30R?

Thanks for your infos
Malte.

A 2871 will support over 400whp (its been proven) and im sure a 3071 will come very close to hitting 470whp... you don't need a sc61 or gt35r for over 400whp..

GT30R will take you there with very quick spool, that's my choice.

i have thought a bit around... and want to hear your oppinoin about this idea:

whats about a older T-Series Garrett Turbo?

T03/T04E
T3/60-1
T3/61
T3/T67

they are very interesting because of the price but nobody can say me how big is the difference in spool up time compared with the new GT Series... i noticed that the GT Series Tubros seems to be match more from the compressor map to my engine... so how big could the difference be?

my problem is the following, i want 400 WHP at the one hand but want to drive the car daily and don't want a turbo that spools at 6k first... when the differenct in spool up time is 500rpm then it makes no sense if it spools at 5,5k instead of 6k but when it spools at 4k then 3,5k is much better... do you know what i mean?

by the way, where is this ultimate turbo comparison thread gone? i searched but i can't find it any more ;-)

Thanks
Malte

I think what some fail to understand that in the general T3/T04E hybrid series (not just "T" series, which is an old Race designation that Turbonetics still uses) can actually accomplish both the 400whp goals with still good on/off boost response. Its really about tunning the car and turning up the wick when properly tune. Not ALL in the GT series is ball-bearing CHRA. Quicker initial spool characteristic is a great added benefit, but not why it was originally designed. The Right T3/T04E can still work properly when configured and won't neccessarily break the bank.
