Default How does the sensor component of the J&S knock sensor function?

I'm wondering cause as I was installing the J&S and looking for a spot to install the sensor, I accidentally shorted it a bit. Well it smoked. I let it touch the alternator's live wire-I know I know I'm a dumbass for not disconnecting the battery for any under hood work-and the engine block. Thus forming a path to ground. It sparked and a little smoke wisped up to my horror. I'm wondering if there any components in there that are sensitive to voltage/current.

I checked the resistance and it was 3.8k or 38k. I'll check again later.
Muchos gracias

The sensor is basically a microphone, and if you saw it smoke, there is a good chance you fried it.

The sensor is a crystal, but is has a 3.9 k resistor to ground. That shouldn't have fried it.
