Default how do you know if a turbo is in good condition?

i know i check for shaft play. there is none. i shook the whole housing and it seemed fine. are there any other aspects i should check out when buying a used turbo?

also check to see if the shaft moves "in" and "out" of the housing.. or u might think of it as "up" and "down." any movement there is the sign of a bad thrust bearing. most people move the shaft from side to side and don't think to check the up and down movement.

how much shaft play is "normal" beause i have a little bit of play on my 3 month old turbo.
