Default HELP! turbo installed but no boost?

Hey guys, i spent all day putting my SFP manifold/downpipe/Precision SC50 on my d16y8 powered civic. After i got everything put on i went out for a drive and it's not building any boost. All the charge pipes are connected, there aren't any massive exhaust leaks from what i could tell.

The only thing is, one of the nuts that holds the mani onto the motor got messed up so we had to end up cutting a stud off so it might have a slight air leak. I'm also running open DP but i dont' think that matters.

My TIAL 38MM wastegate seems to be dumping out air at idle and i thought it wasn't ever supposed to open unless i hit my 6 psi spring limit and then it'd open? I hooked the nipple on top of the wg to a vaccum line which goes into a manual boost controller and the nipple on the side of the WG to a brass nipple on the compressor housing of the turbo. I'm kind of new to external wastegates but i can't figure out why i'm not building any boost. Does anyone have any ideas?

this is what i am doing and it is working fine: i have my top nipple empty with no hoses on it and i have my side nipple connected to a vacuum line off the intake manifold then i spliced my turbo xs boost controler in between that line
so try to take out the top line

how many miles are on the engine.
did you do a compression test prior to the install. I had the same thing happen with my turbo install about a month ago. everything was properly installed still not producing boost... well. after a compression test, my #4 cylinder was giving off zero compression due to bent valves from a timing belt break one week before the install..

not saying that you have bent valves, just saying, get a compression check and make sure your giving the turbo enough to to produce boost.

The top nipple is for electronic boost controllers, Try running it like th eother guy said. Side nipple to vaccum source, inbwteeen just tap into the line for the boost controller Also did you install the o ring thingy on bottom of wastegate?

My motor is fine, i had an apexi kit on there before i put on the SC50 and it spooled 10 psi and pulled hard.

I have the vaccum line on the side of the wastegate going to the turbo and the top one open with no boost controller and a 6 psi spring.

It's still not building any boost, i have a pretty bad exhaust leak coming from the turbo manifold. One of the nuts on the exhaut manifold stud got stripped so we had to end up destroying the stud and pulling it out. There's a definete leak there but i'm not sure if it's enough to keep me from building any boost at all.

The other thing is i don't have a gasket from the turbo to the manifold the square 4 bolt pattern. Both surfaces were flat and smooth so i was told i didn't need a gasket, could it be leaking bad from there? All the charge pipes are connected correctly, i'm running out of ideas.

If your wastegate is leaking exhaust gases at idle, then you forgot the chrome ring for the Tial Wastegate... Its the chrome ring in the top right of this picture

to see if u have any exhaust leaks just disconnect ur brake boost while the engine is running and let it suck up alittle bit of coolant and it'll create smoke and wherever the smoke is coming out of that's where its leaking

yeah, that's what the techs at my shop told me to do. I haven't had any problems from doing it. Just make sure u let the car run for awhile before taking it down the road or the cars behind u will be surrounded by smoke and won't be able to see

I'm thinking it's the leak on the manifold from where i'm missing a stud/nut. There's a good 4 inch section on the head where it's all charred from carbon buildup cause of the exhaust leak. When i revved the motor quite a bit of exhaust gas shot out of the leak so i'm hoping tha'ts what's keeping me from spooling. Gonna get a new stud, put it in and cross my fingers.

Leave your top port on the wastegate open and hook up the side port to a vac source.

nah joseph if the wg is letting exhaust out at idle you dont have the vac lines/boost controller setup right and thats why it will not make boost. open wg = huge exhaust leak basicly. give me a call i might be able to meet you up today.

Okay i think i have the problem solved....for the most part.

The turbo is too big and was hitting the block so the whole left side of the manifold wasn't sealing against the motor. Took it all out and grinded a chunk out of my block so the turbo would clear.

Put everything back on and it was still leaking, i think the manifold is slightly warped or i need a new exhaust mani gasket AGAIN (i just put one on yesterday but we crushed it on)

Anyone know where i can get a thicker gasket so it'll seal the manifold to the head better?

We went for a test drive and i'm getting about 2-3 psi from 5000-7000 rpms but you can still hear a loud exhaust leak from the manifold.

not trying to be a jerk but you prolly shouldnt have a turbo on your car

if you need a lot clearance you could get the exhaust manifold flange from cheap turbo and use that as a spacer and if you dont have enough stud which you wont then just take out all of the studs and use bolts

Shut up.

Just double stack the gaskets if you want something a little bit thicker...

An Easy way to tell if the manifold is warped is to take the manifold off, and put it flange up, and place a straight edge on the flange, and see if you can put a .005" feeler gauge anywhere easily...

Cause the input you gave was negative and rude. Remember when you started out and didn't know that much about turbo's??

I give him a for trying to learn without paying a shop to do it.

You might have to shave off more of the webbing if the turbo or manifold doesn't have a flush surface. Got a camera? post some pics.

actually i had an apexi turbo kit on my car for over a year

it made 176/173 on 8 psi with the afc hack and i ran 8.52 @ the 1/8 mile so i know how to set a turbo kit up.

I'm new to the t3 based turbos and just didn't realize that the turbo wasn't clearing the block, i made the turbo fit by shaving down the lip that comes off the block but it's still not completely sealing so that spacer gasket isn't the solution. I'm making about 2 psi from 5-7K in 2nd and 3rd
