Help! Turbo Glows red
After running my car for about 20 minutes at no boost, the exhaust side of the turbo turns red.. like glowing red.. i need some ideas on what it can be any help is appreciated.. thanks
alright...when you mean no boost I am going to guess that you are accomplishing this by not having the compressor side connected to anything, right? Or a MAJOR boost leak? If so, what is happening is that the turbo is spooling up, possibly as fast as it will go, since there is no load on it (not having to make pressure). Assuming this is what happened, your turbo took some hard miles, possibly needs a rebuild, but I'd just see how it runs first. Make sure you connect the charge pipes IMMEDIATELY, or take the turbo off if this is what happened.

thanks for ideas, but i forgot to mention.. i can boost if i want to, it builds up but even when i'm at cruising speeds, not punching it.. it will heat up and glow red..
-there are no leaks,
-all the hoses are holding boost,
-turbo was rebuilt not too long ago..

That's called turbo surging.
Anyway, I haven't heard to much about this but a while back before I was thinking about turbo a guy was telling me his did it also, Best bet is to get an EGT gauge. I don't remember exactly waht it means. It may not mean anything, this is a question that i have not been told or asked.

no, that is not surging, at all....
the glowing is due to most likely too rich of a mix, or too lean, either conditions will produce high exhaust temps, do get an EGT and watch your temps. listen for pinging as well. have it tuned.

ok i do believe the tuning is really rich.. dirt rich..
i set the timing to 0 all the way without boosting just to see if the turbo turned red, which it did..
i guess i'll go try to lean it out and see what happens.
Thanks a lot guys, ill go try that out.

No I meant when he was stating the turbo spinning freely, But know reading I knew that's what it was when the motor is running really rich. I wasn't sure so i didn't speak on it. Thanks for the clarification.
