Help with small turbo with quick response
hey im new to the FI forum and was planning to do a small turbo set up with quick spool and low budget. im looking to run around 5psi possibly nothing to big. i have a B18b in a integ and leaning towards the road of autox etc, im not a drag person at all so i dont really care bout high end speed. im lookin for somethin junkyard maybe talon turbo or 300zx? nothing requiring me to do to many internals. my main concerns are money and turbo lag.. any help or suggestions?
hahahahahah you'll be glad i'm repsonding to this.
in simple and short form
IMHO on the b18b
get either
-apexi p13 (apexi turbo kit)
-regular t28
*t28 with .86a/r !!!!
all of these will get you full spool of 7>psi by 2800-3100rpms
do search on "glagola1" and "JalopySiR" you'll see what i'm talking about. I like to help others but you should have freaken done search 1st. Lots of info. Glagola made 238whp/226tq on 10psi UNTUNED with stock LS and apexi d16 turbo kit.
JalopySiR made like 209whp/190tq with the T28 .86a/r on mainly stock B20 at only 6psi!!!! and not really tuned! both got full spool under 3,000rpms and pulls nicely to redline of ls/b20 motors which is not very high. glagola1 auto-crosses too so he'll definly understand where your coming from.
I have the apexi kit on my eg9/gsr.... should make 270whp/195tq at 10psi full spool at about 3100rpms..... those are really concervative numbers, definely more potentiol.
If you have any questions IM me.

BTW lag in these smaller turbos?...... none you'll be building boost at like 800rpm and before you can blink you already have instant boost at your comand, controling it will be the problem cause your always going to be downshifting and in upper RPM means constant BOOST all the damn time. crazy i tell ya.
I'm with Charlie. The T28 is a *great* turbo for this type of application. If you can find one in your price range I'd go for it. But they tend to be more rare than the usual T3's, 14b's, and T25's in salvage yards. Thus the price may be a little higher. IMO, T3's can get tricky because there are so many different choices and some are horrible. I think a 14b would be the best bet for your project (edit: if you can't find a nice T28 in your price range). They're *plentiful*, and it's not difficult to find an inexpensive one in good shape. They're a little larger than a T25, but they're small enough to deliver instant boost from a 1.8L. The HP limit of this turbo is in the 300 whp range so it's more than enough for autox (anything beyond 230 whp just causes problems imo).
I also built my car specifically for autox (d16y8, 98 hatch, t25 turbo @ 7 psi). Campaigned it in Street Mod all last year and had a total blast. I am SO glad I went turbo... I you have any questions feel free to IM me. Good luck!

thx alot for the replies guys.. i believe the apexi p13 will be out of my price range.. but the t28 sounds nice and so does the 14lb .. im not looking for any major whp and torque.. i would be satisfied with 180wph! but the t28 reaching fullspool at 3k rpms sounds really nice.. what is the reliability of these turboes? because this will be my daily driver and i plan to keep it for a while
you could also look for a used greddy td05-18g kit/turbo. If you cant find the greddy manifold with the turbo the hks manifold will work. It will also work with the apexi turbo also. It has a standard t25 flange.
well the reliablity of turbos should not be your concern..... Turbos have been around for a long time. If it was a old as 1990's turbo then i would question the reliablity. But if your getting a new unit you should never have a problem with the turbo itself. Turbos last a long time just as long as you properly maintain it.

well you have an LS so a greddy 18G kit would be ok but more for street/strip combo. Simply because at say.....7psi the 18g on the LS will get full spool at about 3150-3200rpms and have noticably more topend than the P13 or T28.
Yes you can use the HKS manifold. HKS manifold is slightly beefyer but as in performance.... no big deal. The apexi manifold is questionable though. YES it does share the same T25 flange like the HKS/greddy manifolds but how the bolts/studs are aranged you will have to custome the bolt holes slightly. Simply because the Apexi turbo P13 has studs attached to it pointing UP into the apexi manifold then you fasten it with nuts to lock it down. SO on the Apexi manifold there are threaded patterns for these threaded bolts to go through. With the greddy turbos and T28 there are no studs from the turbo flange. The Greddy/HKS manifold have STUDS pointing downward,..... going into the turbo flange on the turbo itself then you can fasten it down with nuts.
understand?
a t28 .86a/r normally run about $650ish
regular t28 are like $500
Apexi p13 can not be bought by itself only in a kit
greddy turbo kits are commonly parted out.
cheapest most effective route would be to go with the greddy 18G. You'll find a used complete gsr/si kit for about $1,800-$2,000.
I got my apexi it from a friend for a good deal. I might be selling it for somthing bigger and better but not sure yet.

try a 14b. you will get awesome spool. or go with the greddy kit. my friend's LS with the greddy kit builds full boost at a little over 3000.
i have a TD04-13b on my D16 and it spools full boost at around 2200rpm

to the apexi kit. I got the the B series ones on my b16 hatch back.</TD></TR></TABLE>
POINT proven.... good number for a STOCK B16a and your apexi kit, with great spool time not limiting your topend too much too.
250whp
180tq at 10psi tuned by hondata
but this is with temps of +90F and lots of humidity of where he lives too.
comparted to
bone STOCK B18b LS (glagola1) with apexi kit as well and greddy type24 FMIC
238whp
226tq at 10psi tuned by sms.... not the best but okish. hondata would of yeild better number no doubt.
real numbers, real setups, real people ....... just to give you and idea (glagola1) hope he doesn't mind.

btw it wsn't tuned by Hondata, it was tuned by UberData.
Basically uberdata is the same as Hondata, you modify your stock fuel maps and timing for your application.
