Default Help choosing turbo

Ok so have decided on the tuner turbo kit from Go-Autoworks
http://www.go-autoworks-store.com/gotutusy1.html

There is 6 different turbo's to choose from
-Garrett T3/T4 50trim .63 a/r
-Garrett T3/T4 57trim .63 a/r
-Garrett T3 60 .48 a/r
-Garrett T3/T4 45 trim
-Precision 4845b .63 a/r
-Precision 4831b .64 a/r

I'm going to run this kit on my stock motor b16 for a few months then build engine with forged internals and hope to run 350-400whp. I'd be happy with 250-300whp on stock engine for now so which turbo would be best to select? I guess good spool and the ability to reach my eventual target power are my two requirements.

Any help is much appreciated

Id deal with the stock motor for now and save to do everything in one shot. It will be alot less hassle

I have another b16 that I plan to build over time but would like to turbo the stock motor for now. My tuner has told me 250-300whp isn't a problem on stock b16...

I would think you'd want to go with a smaller turbo on your stock set up, you'll see a quicker spool and should get you to where you want to be, just make sure it's all tuned properly and you have a proper fuel system

What would the spool be like on a garrett t3/t4 50trim .63a/r?

The largest one the 57 trim t3/t4..... You will make 300 whp on the stock motor easily, will reach full boost by 4500 rpm, and will give you the growing room to make 400 whp on a built motor. It is capable of about 450 whp, so its a perfect fit, all the other ones are too small, they might get you to 300 whp, but not to 400 in the future.

Great to hear. What kind of psi will I see 300whp at?

^^^^thats a little incorrect the 57 with .63 will be at full boost by 3800-4000 rpm and will max out in the 420 range. this is the turbo i would chhoose for your specific build.

All set ups vary, but he has a b16, boost will come on full blast between 4000 and 4500 rpm, and there are plenty of cars making 450 whp.on 57 Trims. It all depends on motor set up, fuel used and the tune. But at any rate it is the best choice of the bunch, and it is capable of 400 to 450 whp, whereas none of the others will ne able to achieve this kind of power.

Psi is something that depends on many different factors, best guess would be somewhere between 13-15 psi for 300, and 20-25 for 400 ish

u will never see 450 with a 57 without nuking it soon there after, u will be way past its limitations if u even manage to get that number which i doubt. i run a 57 trim with .63 a/r. 4500 is wasy late if u have a 57 that doesnt make full boost by 4000rpm send it back. the only way i could see that is if u use a topmount and that is the worst choice in manifold for smaller turbos.

No need for a pissing match, facts are facts, there are cars making 450 whp on a 57 trim, and your 1.8 probably does reach full boost ( your running like 12 psi right?) By 4000 rpm, a 1.6 trying to hit 22+ psi will take a little longer.

I will throw in this edit:.450 whp on a 57 trim is not advisable because after about 22 psi or 420 whp you will kill the turbo with the quickness, but it can and has made 450 many many times, as you said it was impossible, that is not true.

never said it was impossible, and really u could say anything could make anything once right. and when u say full boost by: its always implied/assumed thats under 20 psi. just dont want this guy to think he can make 450 with the 57 because thats not the turbo for that much power. i still recommend it. its a decent all around turbo and if u want more response go down to the 50 trim. stay with the .63 a/r that works very well with our platforms.

Glad you threw in that edit. For that 57 trim, that 450whp PEAK (for about 200rpms) can be done at the very top peak of a high reading dyno, but that doesn't mean it should be done. This is why I give conservative estimates for repeatable and reusable power on a given turbocharger, not "beat it until its dead" kind of power.

If you want a faster spool with that kind of power a Garrett Gt3071r is a good choice but costs more.

I'm going to go with the Garrett T3/T4 57trim .63 a/r, when my other spare motor gets built i'll be happy if I can get to 400whp on that. Thanks for the help all
