are harmonic balancers worth it?
im in the process of building a high reving boosted motor and i just learned abot harmonic balancers.are they that much better than any other crank pulley?i didnt really find out that much about them through searches.if you got one or know about them please give me your feedback.

there has been plenty of debating on this, but the stock honda crank pulleys are harmonic and i would suggest using one. i have heard many stories of oil pumps and, consequently, engines being destroyed by non-harmonic pulleys (ie unorthodox) due to excessive vibrations. just use the oem pulley or if you really want an aftermarket one look into fluidamper.

Take a look at my data page at http://www.mtggraphics.com/big...a.htm In the middle are 5 technical papers on the science of crank torsional vibration dampers. After reading them, I'll bet you will never run without one... and a good one at that.
My personal opinion is that they are more "than insurance", they are a necessary addition to prevent high cycle fatigue to the crank/bearings and oil pump.

You may also want to look into ATI Super Dampers as well. They use elasotomer O-rings to control vibration and harmonics as opposed to viscous silicone fluid. Also, if you ever change your set-up, the ATI unit can be rebuilt for you for under $50.
To answer you question though, whether or not you need one depends on the RPM your go to and HP your set-up makes. The honda OEM unit is good for at least 200 HP and maybe more, so if you are making more then say 220, you prolly wanna start looking into after market dampened pulleys.
And to clear things up - the fluidampr and the ATI super damper aren't technically balancers at all - since they balance nothing. The are dampers or dampened pulleys since they dampen harmonic vibrations in the crank. TCI makes a balancer called the Rattler (although I don't think they make one for Hondas). The thing actually rattles b/c there are blanks of metal inside that act as a pendulum to balance the rotational assembly of the crankshaft - these are primarily designed for motors at constant RPM (like airplane props) rather then car engines which accel and decel rapidly.

Wait... There are Honda guys that run without harmonic dampers? Holy crap. A V-8 would rattle itself to death in minutes without one.

you also have to remember too, that when you reach a certain elapsed time in 1/4 mile racing, you need an SFI approved balancer. the fluidampr and the ATI will get you that to pass tech.
