Is the GT35R overkill for my purpose?
I am in the process of researching to turbo my 4th generation (92-96) Prelude. Ideally I would like 400whp on a daily driver. Everything will be upgraded to handle this.
I am looking at the GT35R
http://www.full-race.com/catal...d=109
I know it is overkill since the unit is capable of making 600whp. Are there any issues with only wanting 400whp out of the GT35R. I am looking for quick spool...little lag time.
I want to buy quality parts and do this right the first time. Later if things turn out, I will make this car into a drag car. I don't want the unneeded expense of buying another turbocharger.
Will the GT35R work for me?

The T3/T4 .57 trim would be sufficient for your goals. It'll start spooling around 3500-3800rpms. This was my last turbo and it was definitely a lot of fun on the street.
Yes the 35R would be a really nice turbo to have, but in terms of enjoyment you might not like it on the street. It'll have a much later spool time, which will take away from the "fun" factor on the street.

You'll find that when you start wanting 425 - 450 - 500 whp - that the 35 was a good choice. GT30s with .82 a/r will give you more streetability and still reach those hp levels with your engine.

35r's pretty much spool at any given rpm on a h22 motor.
i think a 30r would be annoying, then again i hate a turbo thats in boost even when you dont want it to be.
ive had great luck with 30r's on b16's and 35rs on b18's and h22's
if you say your building everything....even though you say you want 400 now, you will want more later so the 35r will be a good choice.

Does the 35r work well with the H22 because of larger displacement? My H22 is more like a H24. The motor is bored 20 over and stroked.

I'm using Full Race and really like it. With 2400 ccs you REALLY won't have difficulty spinning the GT35. What cam will you be using? Lots of racers use the stock cam or the 'S' cam. From what I hear no one has really made a better aftermarket turbo cam yet for H22s.

I am thinking about the type S cam. You are right, evans-tuning has dyno graphs of turbo cams actuall losing power! I am researching to see if I can go with type s. Worse case I will stay with stock cams.

gt35 is a great turbo if you wanna hit 400-450whp on pump gas with quick spool. then you can run race gas and hit 600whp when you go to the track.
