Default GT3040R or GT3071R

I currently have a GT28RS on my stock b18c1 and am making 250hp @ 10 psi falling to 8 by 7k. This is with a log manifold,255lph walbro fuel pump,750cc RC's, and hondata s200. Now that i have a daily driver, i am getting ready to send my motor to earl for some lovin.... block head and valvetrain. The question though is which turbo to choose.Im looking at these two and can't figure out which way to go. On one hand i see multiple posts where the 28RS is kicking the 3071R's ***... and on the other hand i see on websites it is supposed to be capable of a lot more. I have seen some graphs from the GT3040R .63AR and they looked great... 420ish on pump @ 15 psi and low 500 on race. The 3071R is advertised as being capable of the same power but w/ an even faster spool time. Then i read its getting killed by the 28RS. what turbo should i go with... please someone clear this all up.

Ive heard great things from the GT30R. Spool by 3500-4000 and will pull the whole way. Awesome power band...

I am selling my T3 to buy the GT30R

when i was looking at one online store i thought i saw where it read that the 3071R replaced the GT30R or something and was supposed to spool 1k rpm sooner? anyone else using either of these or have advice?

i love my GT30R, awsome driveability and spool time for a car driven on the street and raced on the weekends.

Iv been curious about the 3071r since i will only take my car up to 7,000RPM. Any other inputs on this for a low reving setup are appreciated.

The GT28RS is supposed to be the best spool/ street turbo out there. That being said, I have GT3017 in a B18B. Spools by 3.5k to 9psi no problem w/ MBC. But I should mention I'm running a rather small .48 exhaust housing with full 3" exhaust.

You really need to dump that log manifold to get the best out of the turbo- there are some cast units that work well if you can't go 'full race'

I have seen the dyno's showing the difference in the 28RS vs the 3071... I think the 3071 needs to run at higher boost levels to land in the efficiency island, but that's just me guessing.

I'd stay with the 28RS until you can regularly run above 15 psi...

I'll be running the GT3071R with a Full-race set-up here in the next couple months as soon as I get the whole project completed. It will probably be to late to help you much but I'll post my results.

Over the last couple months I have been downgrading/upgrading from a T3/60-1 (which took forever to spool) to a GT30R w/ ,86ar. And what I am finding is the 30R is superior in spool time and average tq compared to the 60-1, but is still a little slow for my liking on the street. On 15PSi the 30r is doing 445 on pump gas with 300 tq holding from around 4700-8000 rpms, and on C16 with a little more boost is doing 550hp with 400tq. It does start spooling before that but ideally I would want something spooling a little faster. On the street I would have no problem sacrificing a little power up top for some more USABLE responsiveness. Over the winter I will most likley go down to a 28RS.

im thinking that after reading your results with the GT30R that i might have a be happier with a GT3040R. The 28RS i have now is a great turbo... but it just isn't big enough for the low 400whp on pump and low 500whp on c16. I noticed mikes01gsr made like 420whp and 515whp on pump. Is there anything better than the 3040R for those kinds of #'s with my built b18c1?

After thinking a bit more about it... would i need to go to 84mm on the motor to get similar results?

If you are building your motor and are sleeving it, why not go 84mm? As for the turbo thing, I am convinced a 28RS would do 400 on pump, but it probably won't do much else... The 3071 would be the next logical choice if you were trying to stay away from the 30R.

@ 84mm do you think the 3071R will do low 400whp on pump and low 500whp on c16? And if so, do you think it would be more efficient (better/more streetable/whatever you want to call it...) to make that power with the 3071R or the 3040R? Thanks so much for the info guys... you're are all helping a ton

Either of the 2 turbos should suffice for your goal of 400whp, but the 3071 will be working harder(higher boost) to achieve that 400hp mark. As for 500+ on C16, don't quote me on it, but it is possible. I would be curious to see how the the 3040 performs, but I would imagine based on its specs that it would do the numbers you are asking without breaking a sweat. When I had my car dynoed I pretty much exhausted the 30r (no pun intended) at 25 psi and C16. What are your goals with this buildup you are doing? Just to have around 400 whp on pump and 500+ on C16?

I was told by a reliable souce that the gt28rs is only capable of 350 flywheel horsepower...which is about 320 whp, but I may be wrong, im pretty much in the same boat as this guy....looking for a capabable and quick spoolin turbo

On paper perhaps, but the 30R I am running is only supposed to flow 500hp max and it is throwing down 550. I am going to put the theory to the test over the winter because I am downgrading my turbo.

i know rmcdaniels made 380 @20 psi falling to 18 psi on a built B16..... thats just not going to be enough for me though... besides he said at that point it was waaay outa its efficiency range and wasn't holding **** really. Anyone know between the 3040R and the 3071R which will spool faster?

Wow, i was told earlier this week to that garrett seems to UDNER rate their turbos, when I thought they over rated them...but case in point you proved it right If the gt28rs could make that power I would stick with it

you would have to ask him the exact specs on his setup. all i know is that it was a built B16. He is a super friendly guy and really knows his ****. He just built a ******* insane twin-charger setup ...pm him @ rmcdaniels for exact specs on his last B16 gt28rs setup.
