Go LsVtec or build the Ls? Decision Decisions, Need more Power.
Well the time has come to begin to plan the final stage to reach my power goals.
My goals originally were around 325-350/275-280, right now Im sitting at 271/253 and Ive been thinking of which way I want to make more power.
I know the Ls, mainly the head has it's limits and from what Ive seen that doesn't really play a role until you start nearing 375-400 hp.
Here are my choices stick with the Ls, and go with Cp pistons/Eagle Rods, new waterpump, oil pump, all the fixins, go with the sc61, and tune to 18-19 psi.
Or
Put together a "descent" Ls vtec, b16 head, Aftermarket Intake manifold, either skunk or aebs. Leave it stock, keep my sc34 or maybe go ahead and upgrade to sc61 and run around 11-12 psi
I had been leaning toward keeping the Ls, and building it, but that will cost more $$$, however in y eyes it will be more reliable. But today I was like hmmm why not just go ahead and do the Ls vtec and If im not happy with the results then I can build "it" and I'll have a Built Ls vtec and I'll make my #'s for sure.
Just want some opinions, this isn't something im going to rush, just something to start to plan for this summer.

Btw I have access to a b16 a head from a friend for $300 too

Buy Brians head . . . he's still selling it right. Good thing Chris finally got the daddy pants on. If the B16 head isnt just a shell then that sounds like the way to go. If you went with the LS you'd be buying $250+oversized ferrea valves, porting work, and springs and retainers which definately will get up there fast. You'd have down time unless you have another ride . . . and you'd either be stuck with the stock LS IM, or have to pay another 250 for a new aftermarket one.

my ls/vtec mad 340 hp at 13 psi, just go with the vtec! If you decide to build it later on, your limiting factor (the ls head) will be taken car of.

I was thinkin the same thing. Save the loot and buy internal goodies and sleeves for the price of doing a lsvtec imo isn't worth it. Stick with the LS

I was in the same boat and I wanted a built straight ls but truthfully if you want to make power you need a better flowing, higher revving head. unfortunatly you need vtec.

Re: (delpoop!)
i am building my ls right now
84mm cp pistons, pauter rods, darton sleeves...
ported ls head and edelbrock intake manifold
you can see what i chose...
if you port an ls head, you can easily make over 400
you can make 400 with a stock ls head

Re: (TurBoTeG)
I was in the same situation. When my ls turbo died and wouldnt keep idle. I always wanted to try ls vtec turbo. Since that happened I am in the process of it now. Try the ls vtec. It is not like you can not go back to ls. You just have to sell the vtec stuff which will not be hard

Re: (mildly interesting)
Keep in mind, a 500whp ls/vtec will be much more streetable than a 500whp ls. It takes cams and MAJOR headwork to get there with an ls. You know my vote iggy...there's a reason honda made vtec...
#16
but he's not trying to accomplish 500whp. his goals are much more mild, 325-350hp which can easily be done with a piston / rod combo in a straight LS motor. of course if he was shooting for higher hp goals the lsvtec would be a much more practical setup! I say retune and try to get your 325 on stock motor - if it blows then just get upgraded pistons and rods

Re: (B18bEK)
I say **** the LS head and just slap a vtec head on there. Last time I was at the dyno...
My stock d16z6 @ 10 psi... 216whp
My buddies stock b18a @ 11 psi... 198whp
His number would fall like a rock at higher rpms.

Re: (beerbongskickass)
Yeah I wish I could just do a Piston/Rod Ls Vtec, but well see. If funds allow then thats the route I'll go.

Re: (Chpt1onBOOST [DMV])
I'm doing a ls-vtec currently. I'm waiting for cp pistons from Earl. It's on back order. IMO, for $300(a b16 head), you get at least extra 20whp. It's a steal to me.

i would get the SC61 and bigger inj and then install those and tune it for ur goal.
then on the side, build up another motor w/ rods, pistons, valetrain, valves, head work, etc.
