Default general wastegate question about side port

what is it actually used for? if running an EBC, the top port is used to control the valve and bleed boost. so what does the side port do?

side port is used when you are running off the wastegate, or using a manual boost controller.

i am about 90% sure on this one...i am running no boost controller, and i have a line coming straight off the compressor to the w/g

hmmm well Im running a line directly off the IM for the boost solenoid, then to the top port. do I even have to use the side port then?

the side port must be used to control boost. if you do not use the side port the wastegate will never open. when you use an ebc you will have connections on both the side and top ports. if you are just running off the spring or using a mbc then only the side port will be used.

when pressure is applied to the bottom (side) port the diaphragm pushes against the spring and opens the wastegate. when using an ebc the top port is used to apply pressure above the diaphragm and keep the valve closed to achieve the desired boost.

This is the best site that I found about MBC. It is not honda related, but all turbos work the same
http://www.turbosaturns.net go to the wastegate 101 section. It is on the right under featured articles. I have my MBC routed like this and it works perfect. Quick spools times because of the top port stopping "pre-opening" on the wastegate spring

okay

spring: nunun
bottom half of the actuator: ===
valve: D
diaphram: |

The wastegate:

nunun|===D

the left nunun is the cylinder where there is a spring, and the top port is located. The right === is the bottom port where you generally apply a MAP signal.

With the top port vented to atmosphere, and the bottom port hooked up to a pressure source the wastegate will open (or the | will slide to the left and move the D with it).

If your boost controller works by using a pressure reducer, a proportional in/out system, you can leave the top open and just connect it to the bottom. Otherwise your EBC works by supplying air to the spring side of the diaphram essentially making the spring stronger than it is. For the sake of explanation if you have 20psi of boost and a 10psi spring you have 10psi on the spring side, and 20psi on the manifold side.
