FMIC vs. SMIC dilemma - price, HP difference, bling/theft factor, etc.
This is getting to be a tough choice for me. I have a 97 civic ex coupe, I'm going to be adding a greddy turbo kit, and I don't plan on running more than 8 lbs. of boost due to the fact that this is a daily driver for school. I have a good opportunity to get a kit for a damn good deal. Here's how it goes:
Greddy SOHC turbo kit
Spearco FMIC
polished FMIC piping for 96-00 civics
Total : 1400 shipped, brand new never opened
OR
Greddy SOHC turbo kit
Total : 1200 shipped, brand new never opened
Now I know it's a ridiculously good price, I would love to have a good front mount setup for the future, that way all I need is a good exhaust setup and I'm pretty set (other supporting mods are already there).
Now here's where the dilemma comes in. As nice as it would be to have a front mount intercooler with polished piping, is it overkill for a greddy SOHC running 8 lbs. of boost? I was thinking of running a sidemount, but it seems that that would be too much of a bottleneck for the turbo setup due to lack of flow compared to a FMIC. There's also the theft factor. A front mount is a dead giveaway of $2k+ under the hood, and would be very attractive to thiefs (honda theft in minnesota is pretty bad).
What do you guys think?
Cliffs: Is a front mount for my setup worth the extra $200, the theft factor, and HP difference vs. a sidemount @ 8psi?
