Finished my SOHC build....
Got everything basically finished up today, so I figured I'd post all this as a completed log of everything done.
I built a Honda bastard child..... the oh-so-hated D17A2.
All the assembly work was done by me.... in my walk in closet... gotta do what you gotta do, right?
I picked up this running 70K longblock for $300 in march and got started.
Tore it all apart and sent the block off for machining, it needed to be bored .020 over and milled a hair, but overall, good shape.
Came back painted it and stuffed it full of goodies.
The head was basically just cleaned up, there was nothing wrong with it, but I had the exhaust guides replaced and the seats 3 angled, put in new valves, springs and retainers and a slightly bigger cam.
All mocked up and basically ready to drop in (the turbo was new when I got it, I took it off the old motor before I dropped the new one in)
I also had a custom IM built by a friend of mine. Those of you who have seen the D17 IM.... its plastic for one, its also got 18" runners shaped like a sink trap.... not exactly what you would consider boost friendly.
The swap on its own was a whole different animal. I had some help from people who have pulled motors before, we did it in a weekend.... started saturday at 730 am the car fired on the first try at 10 sunday morning (we did sleep).
Had the thing dynoed today....
Top line is 12 psi revving to 7200 (turbo runs out of steam past that).
Bottom one is the wastegate only... 7 psi.

EMS is Hondata K-pro, which needs the cam gear to reverse the timing marks (Ds spin CCW, Ks spin CW), but otherwise works like K-pro does normally.
Fuel system is converted from returnless to return
Walbro 255
Aeromotive FPR
Precision 42lb/hr (441cc) injectors (the car takes the bigger o-ring, domestic style injectors)
Turbo Setup is basically custom...
HKS cast iron log
Garrett GT28R (2854R), internally gated
Custom 20x7x3 FMIC and piping
Turbosmart Kompact Dual Port BOV
2.25" exhaust
Boost control is a GM solenoid controlled through K-pro
The car is basically put together for track days and the street. I never really built it to make a top end number, but I got tons of useable power out of it and its running really solidly. Compression checks out at 149-150-150-149 and its pulling almost 24 in-Hg of vaccum..... seems like everything sealed up real well inside too. I'm pretty happy with it, especially considering its my first motor build.

i saw the thread title and rolled my eyes, but man this looks like a really solid build. keeping the sohc's alive. this is the reason no one should hate on another who is trying to pave a way and take a path that is less traveled. very nice.

That actually looks like the power is good, especially when you look at the tiny exhaust ports The powerband seems a lot smoother from any other NA '02+ Honda I've seen. I think if you went to a larger exhaust, you'd be a bit happier with the power.

The turbo from the manifold back is my original setup from when I originally boosted a stock motor. I havent decided what exactly to do with all of it yet. I'm happy with where its at right now, but I'm sure I'll look into better, more efficient options down the road. Something that spools just as fast but makes better power would be a big help. Not sure if its gonna take a better manifold, I'm sure enlarging the DP, etc.... will help but there's just minimal room up there with the way the manifold plants the turbo on the block, and I dont know if its worth the small jump to a 28RS, but at the same time the 2871 is probably a bit on the big side. With the alternator on the front side of the block, the turbo needs to be mounted real high, or mounted way right to get a filter on it if I were to orient it with the compressor to the driver side, and the front motor mount is in such a place it makes running a DP a pain in the *** if you mount it too far right. Its a game, but I'll deal with that part later.

kinda off topic... but the hoses you used for ur oil lines and etc. the silver one wit red and blue ends... where did u buy those? can i order them online? can u giv me a website please thanks
