Failed sniffer on GSR w/ Greddy turbo - any suggestions?
Car is a 96 GSR with a Greddy turbo kit. I'm using the blue-box FMU and 310cc injectors that came with it. Motor is bone stock otherwise, and has 137k miles. I have a Hondata 2B sitting in the garage but was waiting to install it after I had the new downpipe and cat fitted.
15MPH Test:
HC (PPM)
Max 61 Meas 76
CO(%)
Max .54 Meas .34
NOx (PPM)
Max 1016 Meas 631
25MPH Test:
HC (PPM)
Max 45 Meas 44
CO(%)
Max .53 Meas .34
NOx (PPM)
Max 876 Meas 157
As you can see, I'm really close to passing. Guy at the shop recommended a new cat and possibly a new O2 sensor. I'm sure boosting with the shitty Greddy blue-band-aid didnt help my cat (runs very rich under boost). I can borrow a newer GSR cat with about 40k miles on it, and bump the timing up to 18 (at 16 now). Any other ideas?
BTW, this shop had no problem with the visual inspection. I have the Type 24 FMIC and a Type S BOV, neither were an issue for him as long as I had my nice little CARB sticker.

Running too rich in general.
If you can keep yourself out of boost, just put the stock injectors back in and take out the blue box... Then you'll pass.
Or, if you have some way of adjusting fuel pressure, turn it down...
Don't touch the timing.......

It's just that I see others passing with the same kit, so it shouldn't be running rich all the time. I still get 28mpg on the highway.
Why not touch the timing?

well, advancing ignition timing increases NOx. It might drop your HCs a little though. Not really worth the effort... better to have them see it set at 16deg since they check.
The new cat should do it...... But so will what I suggested before.

well, the guy at the shop recommended bumping the timing up, so I know he won't care. I'm positive the suggestions you gave would work, but I'm looking for the solution with the least amount of effort involved, since I'm taking the 310's and blue box out for the 440's/2B in another week or 2.

That's one part that bugs me. I left it with them for about 3 hours so I don't know when they did the test. When I went to pick up the car it was pretty warm, so I think it was at full operating temp when they tested.

Make sure the cel isn't on. Stock timing will do. Definitely another cat will lower the HC readout.
or
You can ask the technician if he can bump the max readout of the HC to 100.

If you still have the stock injectors, why don't you just put those back in for the day. If you dont, I'd suggest lowering your idle fuel pressure and then get a hold of the highest octane gas you can find. Also, your cat is gonna make the biggest difference...this could be a sign that yours is starting to fail.
I just got my car smogged this Saturday....it gave me no problems but I was pretty worried the nite before. Good Luck with yours!

I'm not sure the blue box will work with the stock injectors. I have a 76 station down the street that sells 100 ocatane, some of which I use every time I fill up. For sure I will change out the cat though. Probably step back up to stock heat range spark plug too.

yup too rich. The blue box shouldnt have any trouble with the stock injectors as long as you stay in part throttle. Just put them on for the drive up to the smog stationm, and put the 310s back on when you get home.

hmm, I'll throw on the new cat and some 89 octane with a bottle of HEET, and just hope I remember not to boost. I'll have to drive around the freeways for 2 hours that night to kill that tank of 89.

Yup, and just barely too. And I thought sourcing the Greddy CARB sticker was a pain...this takes it. I don't know what I'll do when I have 2 turbo cars.

I wouldn't wanna start swapping out injectors or what not because the blue box is calibrated to mate with the 310cc. I passed smog last February with the Hydro Carbon(HC) readout of 24 with my Greddy SP exhaust intack. Granted, my car had 33k miles on the odo and the motor is running in perfect shape.
Borrow a friends cat, make sure no cel is on because the ecu will run extremely rich, change oil and replace plugs if needed.

i passed with my blue box, barely. Ive got a hondata 2b now and im sure it would be a better story now.
You had to wait 3 hours? WOW. I did mine durring lunch break. I tore *** in the car for about 20 mins, pulled up to a test only station, my car was on the rack within a minute, and was done in 15 mins. Also I had my intercooler on, but no BOV at the time.
