EMS question
If I get an AEM EMS, do I need any of the other management things like boost controller, or does it have one built in? And does it have a turbo timer function?
Also, i have searched for this and cant figure out... what exactly does a BOV do, and on Full-Race, they have intercoolers which have a mount location for one... what is the benefit of having it there instead of on the plumbing...?
Thx!

The ems allows you to control boost using a gm boost solenoid which runs about $20. All you have to do is wire the solenoid to the ems and set it up in the software. This is how I am controlling boost. There is no turbo timer function on the ems.
A bov is a valve on the charge pipe that releases the pressure when you let go of the throttle. Otherwise the pressurized air will smack against the closed throttle plate and work backwards into the turbocharger and could damage the turbo wheel. Some people have their theories on where to put it but it will basically work anywhere in the system. Its most likely for ease of installation. Hope this helps

The AEM EMS does have a boost controller option. I dont know about turbo timer function, but im sure it does.
A BOV releases the boost pressures when the throttle plate closes so that it doesnt go back to the turbo. It would cause the turbo to slow and reverse and this is not good when the turbo is spinning at 100,000+ rpm's.
The supposed benefit of having a BOV closer to the turbo is that it gives you better throttle response if you just let off the throttle for a split second since there will be some boost already present in the charge pipes.
Edit: D-ohh, i typed too slow

So the boost solenoid hooks up to the Waste Gate... what hooks up to the BOV?</TD></TR></TABLE>
BOV just hooks up to another vacuum source.
Here's some more information on the boost solenoid.

EMS does not control the BOV. When you let off the gas and the throttle body shuts, the vacuum created will cause the BOV to open. AEM sells a 3.5 bar MAP sensor, so whoever you bought the EMS from should also have that available. If not, theres probably someone on this forum with a store that can get you a good price on one.

keep in mind the ems also works with the stock map sensor so there is no need for another one unless you run over 11psi. The ems can use the aem 3.5bar, aem 5bar, honda, gm 3bar, gm 2bar etc...you just select the one your using.
