Electronic Boost Controllers and turbo spool up time?
Currently I am running boost off of my TIAL wastegate, but am considering purchasing an electronic boost controller (either the Greddy Profec B or the HKS EVC IV). Can anyone tell me what effects the electronic boost controller will have in relation to my turbo spool up time. I am currently running a DRAG GEN III on a 99' GSR and with the wastegate (.4bar) I reach full boost at ~ 4200 rpms, can I expect the spool up time to increase enough with the electronic boost controller so that I reach full boost at ~ 3200 rpms or is this wishful thinking?
Any boost controller, electronic or manual will make a NOTICEABLE difference in spool time... I would put you at around 3500-3600 or so if it's taking until 4200 now; my turbo without a BC would spool up at around 3500 and when I put the BC on it hits full boost just over 3000 rpm now.
damn 4200rpm, that's a big turbo you got there.
i personally have a manual boost controller and didn't notice a faster spool-up time. maybe it's just my application.

It keeps the wastegate completely close until desired boost is reached, that's how it spools up quicker. And i'm pretty sure it won't work on a MBC...
Depends on the MBC you're using. The idea is that a regular wastegate is halfway open already when you're at half your max boost level. So if you're maxing at 8psi, when you are at 2 psi the wastegate is already 25% open and venting exhaust that SHOULD be accelerating the turbo and instead you're wasting it. As you get closer to max boost, the WG opens farther and farther until it's completely open. This is wasting LOTS of exhaust energy that would otherwise be creating boost faster for you. A -good- boost controller will prevent the WG from opening until you reach maximum boost or close to max boost, at which point it opens the wastegate all at once to keep from OVERboosting.
If your manual boost controller is just a bleeder valve, this will not help spool time one bit. However the ball-spring check valve type MBCs DO prevent the wastegate from opening until they reach their setpoint so you will spool faster. These include the $4 C-speed racing homemade MBC and the Joe P MBC, as well as I believe the Turbo XS MBC.
