Default Dumptube question

I just installed a turbo kit and I was wondering about the dumptube.

Is it supposed to throw out air all the time? If I put my hand under the dumptube, I feel air coming out of it, is that normal?

no there should not be air coming out all the time from the dump tube. It's exactly as the name implies. It dumps exhaust from the wastegate when the waste gate opens. In other time it should be closed. SOunds as if you wastgate may not be closing completely

sounds like the WG is stuck open, what type of wg is it?

air should only come ouit when its ''dumped'' sounds like your wastegate is dumping air all the time. when its not supposed to

okay, i was doing some research and i noticed some people didn't install a "ring" and they had the WG leak out the dumptube.

when i got my turbo kit, i remember a ring in the kit and i didn't know what it was for, so i just put it aside.

where does the ring go cause now i'm betting that ring not installed is what is causing my WG to be open at idle.

the "ring" your refering too is known as the fire ring. it should be installed on the bottom of the wastegate. it will stick out a little when installed, but will provide a tight seal once the wastegate is bolted down.

hth.........

That's a gasket and not the fire ring. The fire ring is what was stated earlier that goes into the bottom of the wastegate

i know i have the gasket on there, but i don't have that metal ring on there.

so would that be causing the leak through the dumptube?

hell yeah. If it is not sealing then you can't really build boost. Or it builds really slowly.

Once you put in on you should notice a difference

yeah, it seemed like it was taking a bit too long to build boost.

i didn't have the ring on. i had it in my tool box so i just put it on, but its too late to drive it.

the car will still build boost if there was no fire ring in the wategate, it will just spool up a little later than normal. the car will be alot quiter once u put the fire ring in there

I did the same thing as you, left out the valve ring, in fact I thought it was a spare flange ops
Took a few mins to work out why the WG was leaking, removed the WG took it apart and fitted the ring, no problems since.

By the way Q?

What’s better, running the dump tube under the car to vent to atmosphere or plumbing it into the down pipe? As far I can tell the only advantage would be the sound?

I heard that you could possibly lose horse power depending on how it's plumbed back into the exhaust.

i'm running a Drag kit with a t3/t4 turbo and it just seemed like it too a little longer than expected for the turbo to spool up. like my car really wouldn't start moving til middle of third gear or something.

i too thought it was an extra flange and just put the ring aside
