Default To Do or Not To Do (Turbo Type-R)

Well, I previously had a turbo'd b16 EG and I loved it. Unforuntually I had to sell it.

But, I picked up an ITR and I have been really happy with it so far... except its quite slower than the EG.

It just so happens where I moved and the people I met, mostly have turbo'd EGs.

I feel out of the loop and I really love turbo setups.

Is it safe to turbo an R motor? Whats a safe PSI to stay at, 5 pounds? I need as much feedback from those who own(ed) R motors with turbo setups. I need to know how to go about it safely. Much appreciated.

I'd suggest 5-8psi on a 50trim t3/t04e, .63a/r. It flows enough to make 400whp, and [with constant monitoring & tuning] make an easy 350whp safely on the R. I'd suggest a larger fmic since its AZ, but I don't know if you have 92/93 oct gas down there.

If you love pipe dreams and bling, go ahead with a 57 or 60 trim, or even a 60-1. The 50trim will drop to 70% (at worst) at redline, yet still have quick spool like you'd expect from a type-r.

We have 91 octane.

One thing that concerns me BIG time is the heat. I want to make sure that it is extra cool. So a large FMIC would be smart. I have to get a manifold that can accompy my A/C as well. I want to do the setup really nice and really clean. I'd assume you guys wouldn't recommend using like UberData or Crome for engine management?

Thanks for the quick response btw.

Look at the goals that you want to acheive in terms of power, and response, (how do you want the power? Responsive, a little laggy, or room to grow?) what is the purpose of the car? Are you just street attacking EGs? Or are you looking to drag race, or road race. Do you plan to keep the motor stock? or go further from there?

Then contact me... we can go from there, and put something together Just Right like Goldie locks in the baby bear's bed...

I want decent power. I am just a street car guy. I don't want a track car.

I love to have fun street cars that are ridiculously fast, yet still drivable.

I love that, "street attacking EGs"... niiiice.

Turbo it with room to grow. My ITR is 100% a daily and is a blast.

We have build several 290-300 whp bone stock ITR's, It's in the setup and tune.

turbo it, tune it, and you will be happy with it . There was an article a while back of a turbocharged and supercharged integra type r that made like 450hp bone stock. So I would assume that a turbo at less then 10psi well tuned should not be an issue.

I turboed mine right after I bought it. The stock pistons lasted 4 years on 10Psig. (blew ringlands on #3 and #4) If I would have had proper engine management and tuning right from the start, it probably would have lasted a little longer. It was great fun. Over the winter I built another motor for it, this time with 9:1 CP pistons and Eagles, so now it's time for some real fun.

My bone stock motor made 295whp on a Mustang dyno, and ran 12.6s all day long on street tires.

To the original poster. Run a T3 Super 60 if you want a fun street car with a huge powerband. If you have the cash run a GT28RS. Both will make the max HP the stock motor can handle safely in my opinion.
