Default DIY oil restrictor. Cost = $3

So I had a 14b that smoked quite bit and a while ago I bought an oil restrictor from an aircraft supply store. The hole was a bit small. And the concensus seems to be that .060 is a good size for the hole. I believe ATP turbo or some other company sells them with this size hole. Anyway.. I paid 10 shipped. And It worked great.

then I got thinking...

Parts list:
-1 1/8NPT double male
-1 1/8NPT Double female
-1 1/8NPT square head plug
-small length of teflon tape

Of course I did have tools sitting around which I used... and maybe you don't have them. In that case... you should have them and shame on you.

Dremel w/ cutting wheel
1/8 NPT tap
1/16 drill bit
drill
beer
small screwdriver

-so buy the parts... get the plug... and cut the very tip of the threads off. You will be using just the tip. NPT is tapered a bit so you won't be able to fit much of the plug down into the female but the very tip should go all the way in.

-Get the double female and tap one side. This will allow the lil plug to go even deeper into the hole.

-Get the lil disc of plug and cut a groove into it so you can use a screwdriver to twist the plug into the thread.

-screw the disc of plug into the tapped end of the double female.

-Now get the 1/16 bit and drill a hole right in the middle of the plug.

-Now that all the fine motor skill stuff is done go have a beer.

-put a lil teflon tape on the end of the double male and screw it into the tapped side of the double female.

-You're done! No more turbo smoke... hopefully.

This will go on a friend's car which has a junkyard turbo. These oil restrictors are a must IMO for older turbos but definitely can't hurt if you have an expensive *** turbo. You can do your own research on hole size but I think 1/16 is the best way to go.

I actually was thinking about selling these but the cost of postage and an envelope alone is close to the price of the restrictors. And I have to spend all of 5 minutes cutting/fabbing/drinking beers.

got one cheaper for ya.. go to napa get a 3an-1/8npt fitting for around 50 cents. .055" drill bit from grainger is like 60 cents and braze the fitting shut.. drill the hole and bam you got a restrictor..

do these things actually lower the pressure? or is it too much flow that is overwhelming the bearings?

they lower the pressure and flow.. mine with the .055" hole has 5psi at idle and 30 at redline..

you could also go to most hardware stores/home depot and buy a tiny ball valve of correct size and have an adjustable restrictor. We just bought a few for I.V. fuel system cleaners at work.

I posted this the other day in someone else's thread, but if you have a welder, you can just weld the hole shut on the original fitting and drill a smaller hole in it. I did this about 2 weeks ago and it eliminated the smoking/oil leaking problem on my t3/t04e..

This could of course be done for cheaper by brazing the fittings or welding whatever other fitting you have... of course non-brass fitting etc.

Just trying to give some people an idea of how to do it if they don't have those resources. I have the resources to have a fitting brazed/welded but for a this DIY I thought it be best to have the restrictor as easy to make as possible.
