Default DIY BOOST CONTROLLER question

I've searched but didn't find to much. Has anyone or does anyone here run a DIY boost controller w/ the spring and ball? If you have or do run this then what are your ideas on it. So far what I have seen or read is that you see boost spike or creep w/ these and i've also read that it works just fine but it kind of depends on the design or spring stiffness etc... But just what do you guys know about these things. I usually would just buy one but I need one either today or tomorrow FOR SURE and don't have the time to wait for it. If these work decently then i'll build one.. TIA

Shane

Use a compressor valve. I do.

what's a compressor valve? Are you talking about the pressure regulator? If so how much and where did you get it? got any pics?

It's a Campbell Hausfeld piece... blue in colour. I can't remember the PN, I got it from Canadian Tire for $30 or so. I'll see if I can get the PN later on.

I have made my own boost controller. I made it after the famous Joe P controller. It worked just fine. Small amount of boost spike. I just happened to a spring laying around that worked. I think that is the hardest part to find.

the spring and ball type kinda suck.. i use a needle valve and it works great .. like 2$ from sears .. T it off from wastegate and vent one side of valve to atmosphere.. more u open it less signal wastegate recieves and opens later.. ppl say they create lag but mine does not.. its in the plumbing section of any store..

No I had found those already. my question isn't how to build it, my question is how well did they work? Is there boost spike or creap or does it hold pretty well?

i've ran 2, one my integra and one on my sr20 240. Neither had boost creep issues. set em both to 10 psi, held great. the sr20 i had set to 14 and it held perfectly.

the only con is that they are hard to find a starting point and then to adjust em. other than that, works great!

ace hardware. I got 2 barb fittings that screw together, i put the ball bearing on the side where the flow of pressure starts, and the spring on the wastegate side. I then placed it inline between my wastegate and the boost/vacuum source. twisting it together adjusts the boost pressure needed.

from there, i took a test drive (on the 240) to see that the boost kept increasing from 14psi, so i stopped the car. unscrewed the barb fittings, cut a couple coils off the spring, then tried it all over again, this time it only boosted to like 8 psi (stock). So from there, i just kept tighting the barb fittings together, until i reached my 14 psi. No spiking at all.

very easy basic design, worked well.

the one i made was like this

http://www.geocities.com/chmwatson/FAQs/mbc.html
internal wategate at 10 12 and 15 psi
tial 38mm at 15psi

never any boost creep or spikes
this type is susposed to decrease spool up time too, it holds the wategate shut until the pressure is enough to push the ball up, so it doesnt leak any exaust out the wastegate.

hope this helps
