Thanx for the info J. Davis! I am pretty interested in trying to make an electronic knock detection thing like you made. I just need something that is small and can easily be used on other cars I tune. Obviously my det cans are probably to big unless I made different size pipes for different engines and stuff.

I bet, I've learned so much just from the online conversations we've had.

I' m going to home depot now, need to give this a try. What kind of earphones/protectors did you use SOHC_MShue?

As you guys go the one route, I'm going to try and make one of the electronic ones that J.Davis has been talking about. I'll do my best to put together a DIY write-up for it.

I just used some generic ear protectors my dad had lying around that he used when mowing the lawn . You can get them at lowes or something i'm sure. In fact everything I used came from lowes except for those which i got for free.

From what I've heard, the difference between a human ear using a knock sensor and these cans is what JD alluded to. The Knock Sensor is not actual, un-transduced, viabrations coming to your ear, whereas the cans are.

BigMoose's Ramblings, the right hand column has the knock sensor stuffs.

This is the page on recording knock sensor sounds, and graphical representation of the audio information.

I don't mean to post this stuff up to sidetrack from det cans, in fact if you can record det can output and render it graphically a la the second link above, we might end up ahead of the game.

However, if you want to approach the matter from an electronics standpoint, VEMS has some good info you can explore on here for perusal. It also has some great detonation info, for general knowledge.

Here is another link to look on how to make an electronic detector:http://autospeed.drive.com.au/....html

And another on how to make a detonation recorder:http://autospeed.drive.com.au/....html

I don't mean to get off track from the "Det Can" discussion, but this may help with the info Jdavis posted..

PS:I did find some ear protectors at home depot fo $10

I'm posting this shizzle up with the intent to get some of you guys to take audio recordings of your det cans, and the rest for the sake of general knowledge.

I haven't tried this yet... liking all the ideas though, but i have one too.

I was thinking that you take the first guys idea, copper pipe and some tubing, run that into a small box, probably with foam inside, maybe somehting else. Then you know those microphones that you use with your computer, what if you stuck that inside the box, then plugged that into your computer. Then you would just need some sort of program to see the audio waves, (any suggestions). You could also use your laptop to a.) listen and b.) watch all while running the tunning program of your choice. If someone has a program that would work with this, i'm up for making one.

found that the TXS tuner box works well if you have some ambient noise reducing headphones http://www.bose.com/controller...15318

can get a bit costly though

I'm thinking a microphone would be easily incorporated into the det can setup, as long as RF interference can be avoided. Then we would be able to pump the output to a set of headphones and or a laptop for analysis.

Oh god, he let you play with a flare gun? I knew he hated you, I think he was hoping you'd put out an eye.
