D16 turbo oil explosion
Hey everyone,
I own a Civic 95 sedan, D16 turbocharged.
Specs:
D16 stock internals.
Stock I/M.
Front big intercooler.
Ebay turbo T3/T4 - A/R 50. boost ~ 0.5 bar.
TIAL wastegate.
Ebay Exhaust manifold + 3" straight pipe.
Turbo Ibiza exhaust.
Greddy type s BOV.
P28 custom chipped, street tuned.
Some days ago I went on a approx. 1 hour trip. Suddely, Probably, after letting off the gas after boosting, there was a big explosion and, white smoke came out of the engine bay. Turned the engine immediatly, open the hood and.. OIL anywhere.
After letting the engine cold a little bit, I've searched what went wrong. The only thing I found is fried plastic band laying underneath the car which, I dunno where came from. It seems like the the oil sprayed out of the pcv valve hose, which I kept open temporary. But i'm not sure about it.
A known problem is that the turbo leaking small oil amounts to the I/M side.
Strated the engine, and everything sounded alright, without oil leaks or stuff like that. I drove the car like that for ~ 60 km without trying to boost, and the engine was working prefctly.
I took the turbo kit off the car to check what went wrong and, for now the only weird thing i found is, that the oil return line was touching the downpipe and fried a little bit. may I cause the problem?
Got to mention it was a pretty hot day.
Also i'm suspecting the BOV, which did weird noises and seemed like it keep opening even at boost.
The car running those days nicely without the turbo, so I keep blaming the turbo for doing all the mess.
Someone told me that may the turbo pressure went through the rings to the crankcase, and it was a tamporary failure. Is that possble?
Is it possible that the oil sprayed out of the turbo itself?
What do you guys think?
Any help will be appreciated.

Re: D16 turbo oil explosion
do a leak down test and report your findings.
if u dont know what a leak down test is, take it to a mechanic or learn to use google to search for a description.
