Cylinder to Piston clearance
What clearences are recommended for 9.1 compression in a B18c.
Running the JE pistons!
Could the piston to cylinder clearance be the problem with the smoke or will this just couse piston slap?
Read my Smoking poll have problems with smoking also, let me know what you think.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (highbrid)
Every piston has a different clearance.
On a 81mm bore , Wisco say .0026-.0028
Check with JE. And make sure your machine shop has the ability to measure in 1/10 of thousands.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (CRVRX)
Will this cause smoke or piston slap or both.
Engine is not that noisey but burns oil.
I guess I need to contact JE.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (crxhybrid1320)
If I remember right JE fi pistons were .0032 to .0040 depending on appl. yes smoke and slap will result from to much clearance.
Also I run .0032 for Wiseco fi pistons I think there spec is for n/a and they don't account for the expansion/heat a fi motor sees.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (earl)
Do not remember and did not write it down.
Contacted JE today they said it should be at .003
and no more than .004. Need to remove the head and see.
JE also told me that the top ring is chrome and the cylinders needed to be honed for that chrome ring.
What do you use to filefit your rings. I used a ordinary file but wanted to know if I should buy the tool to make sure its squared evenly..

Lock the file in a vice, fill the gap with the file and pull the ring forward only. By holding the ring against the file, your gaps should remain straight.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (crxhybrid1320)
You must deburr ALL edges. This is very important. You will scratch the cylinder walls and the ring will not seat properly in the ring land.

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (earl)
When you say deburr the edges just make sure the edge of the ring is smooth and does not have any rough edges and spins freely on the ringland also
Correct!

Re: Cylinder to Piston clearance (lazerus)
Piston to wall really depends alot on just how much power you are gonna make.
I've seen Je's go from .0035 to .0065.

Ring filing is a pain in the butt, but since I have to do it everytime I build a motor, I spent $85 for the ring filing tool from Manley.
