cracks in wastegate chamber, turbo usable?
first is this true? from http://www.vfaq.com/mods/porting-turbo.html
if so, i guess a little leak is ok? and it doesnt seem to have cracked all the way out, only in the chamber. here are some pics:
turbine inlet with a few cracks, big cracks in wastegate chamber
i assume the other end of the two big cracks. is the flap dislocated?
can you identify the turbo - td05h-14b? 16g? 18g?
keep/use the downpipe?
so what do you think? i got it for 100$ and the guy said he'll try to find me another turbine housing that isnt cracked. if he finds one, can i just swap it? i want to keep the rest of this one cuz theres like no shaftplay whatsoever.
if i dont hear from him, can i fix this or seal it up and use an external wastegate? btw whats the psi on this wastegate? thanks!
This is a look at the wastegate hole. Note all the nice cracks - ALL stock TD05s will end up with at least 2 of the 3 mine has, due to the design of the turbo. They crack at the thinnest point of the seat, where the air exits to the O2 housing. I enlarged the opening a good bit. Just make sure to leave the hole small enough for the wastegate flapper to seal.

Re: cracks in wastegate chamber, turbo usable? (XDEep)
T3 turbines always have hairline cracks, you ignore them as they don't hurt anything.
I don't have any real Mitsu turbo experience, but I'd be inclined to take the same view. You can't expect cast iron to heat cycle like that without some small cosmetic flaws. HOWEVER. The cracks around the wastegate flapper port look a little extreme.
You can get one of those turbos in great shape for $100 without any problems, so I might steer my dollars in that direction. If the seller drops price, I'd go shopping for another turbine or possibly see about a quick tack weld and grind.
