Haha, exactly what i was thinking. I've used copper spray for years and it's never been the cause of a problem, and who knows how many times it's helped.

funny.

we are running a copper o-ringed block, and use copper sprayed oem gaskets to help seal the outer perimeter. 800 hp to the tires and never had a gasket problem...........and our engines dont leak around the outside either.........

copper spray=working wonderfully for me so far, heavily boosted d16a6 (20 psi).

head was decked perfectly, and the block was already perfect.

ARP head studs, OEM gasket. stock bore (srp pistons/eagles)

well, in my case, i just pulled the head off of my motor. i have another head which has been machined and is practically brand new. using a golden eagle 84.5mm head gasket. i don't plan on pulling the block out and machining it since everything looks great. i will test the surface of the block for trueness but that's the main reason why i asked this question in the first place.
plus i had a problem before with the headgasket. it was leaking a bit of water into the oil.

this is a pic of the block. you won't be able to tell anything but that's after a little over 10k miles. cyl 2 and 3 had some oil sitting on top so it's got a sticky oil stain. 1 and 4 look brand new.

What torque sequence are you using?

thats funny... i bought a GE 83mm gasket. it leaked coolant right by the timing belt in the exhaust corner side of the head... sucked.

my dad's mechanic buddy used i assume an oem gasket w/ some red sealant stuff...dunno what it is but it holds 26 psi on an sc63 fine... i had used copper spray as well (a decent coat) on the GE gasket

head was decked block was i assume from GE (GE old style sleeves, copper o-rings)

I got the same problem with cometic gasket and I hate it. I was gonna take the head off til Tbone told me it was normal and it had happened to him.

I used hylomar on my cometic gasket and no issues with it leaking at all.

I had a head gasket problem too. I was running the step decked Darton pro sleeves w/ a comectic. It leaked when i got around 25 psi. I called cometic and they told me not to copper spray their gasket, because their gasket would reject the spray. But i have friend that are running the same head gasket and running higher power w/ copper spray on their perfectly fine. I say its all personal preference. On my next build, i'll probably use copper spray!

how would a HG reject copperspray? i think you might have talked to a weirdo there.

i dont think anything will"reject" it, except oily stuff maybe.

haha

Before I use a new head gasket I always wipe it down very well if not too well with alcohol and always have super clean dry hands before handling it, I also wash both mating surfaces with a lint free towel soaked in alcohol, for the prewash i use residue free brake parts cleaner, not sure if brake parts cleaner is the right thing to use but it sure cleans oil and grease and coolant residues before i finish with alcohol. I have reused my copper head gasket several times, i just folow the annealing procedure to soften it up very carefully and install it slightly warm after "baking" and cleaning with alcohol. maybe a couple of these tips might help someone. being extra clean seems to really help with mating issues and copper spray adhearing, i also give the spray ten minutes to get a bit tacky so it doesnt slip as well as being extra carefull with torque sequence.

i tested the spray on a used gasket. seems to just stay tacky and not completely dry. it's been humid but i let it sit for over 24 hours.

not 100% sure but it might be anaerobic and thats why it wont cure in air, might need to be sealed tight from air in order to cure.

for those of you who have used copper spray, what do you use to clean it off when removing it later down the road?

i just recently removed my head from a toasted shortblock and with the copper sprayed cometic. it didnt make a mess at all. in fact it almost looked as if it was never on there and i put plenty on. but yeah thinner should clean it off, or brake clean but thats kinda harsh. im rubbing my down with thinner and respraying it with copper and reusing. no need to drop 110 bucks on a new cometics turbo gasket when nothing wrong with the one i took off.
