Default A comparison of a billet 5731 and a billet 3076

Today, I wanted to share with HT the results of testing two turbos. This test came about because I wanted to improve the spool in my set-up and retain top-end power.

The 5731 dyno:
WHP and TQ

Boost

As you can see, the turbo has some lag.

The car is a 91 Honda Civic hatchback.
The engine is a piston rod B16 (rebuilt by me)
The turbos 5731 and 3076 (both built by me, both with a 6+6 57 mm billet compressor wheel)
Installed by (Furyof4 and mar778c)
Inspiration by Natural Aspirations
Tuned by d-rob

The engine bay:

The turbos:
Compressor covers and wheels

Ball bearing on the left (3076)
Journal on the right (5731)
They both have the same cover

Turbos side by side

Ball bearing on the left (3076)
Journal on the right (5731)
They both use a 0.63 A/R T3 exhaust housing

The results:
WHP and TQ

Ball Bearing Solid line
Journal Bearing Dashed line

Boost Plots
Both turbos at 22 lbs of boost

Ball Bearing Orange
Journal Purple

The ball bearing turbo is definitely better on the streets. Much more responsive.

As a side note. I did some testing with 110 but I have some limitations in my fuel system which prevented me from pushing this set-up to 500+. I still have stock wiring to the fuel pump.

Last run before, the A/F's went bad.

Happy New Year.

More testing and new turbos to come after we work out some more kinks.

Looks like nothing but fun with the 3076 Marcel I'm still contemplating using my old LS block for a LSV-T with a 3076 or staying with the B16 and keeping it simple with a GTX2860r or perhaps bigger slightly with a 2867

Boost curves seem a little creepy to me based off of those graphs

Yeah, the manifold design doesn't lend itself well to wastegate flow.

A brief update. A month ago furyof4 re-wired my old walbro 255. I went back to the dyno for a re-tune. Here is the results.

27lbs of boost.

Next thing will be a pump change(450lph), 1300 cc injectors, 4 bar map sensor, and e85.

Take a punch and push the relief check valve down. Prevents the pump from bypassing so much fuel below 75psi. It's actually a fairly large jump in fuel volume, the evo guys running 30+ psi on stock frame turbos but still at single 255 power levels figured it out a while back. Since the pressure relief is just a simple spring and ball type it bypasses fuel well before 75psi. Walbro should change the nomenclature to indicate that the relief is fully open at 75psi I think.

Here's the flow report from kinsler comparing the two

GSS342 (walbro 255lph rated hp unmodified)
50psi: 209lph - 8.6 amp
70psi: 177lph - 11.1 amp
100psi: 68lph - 15.1 amp

GSS340 (walbro 255lph rated hp modified relief valve)
50psi: 242lph - 8.1 amp
70psi: 208lph - 10.4 amp
100psi: 153lph - 14.6 amp

You could always run a KB boost a pump and get even more out of it

Thanks for sharing, must be a beast in the ED6. Is it just me or does that 5731 turbine inlet look pretty damn big for a .63 T3? Not doubting, just curious, maybe it's the pic/shadows?
