Default cat issues.......need response by tommrow!

Ok, i have an appt, tommrow at my muffler shop to do one of two things: Cut my thermal down by 4" because my cat is to long and my hangers dont match up.......

OR, **** the cat all together and run a test pipe.

i am in NY, so i am curious as to how this will play out, will i pass emissions? (do we even have emissions here) and what are your thoughts, i am sick of the headaches and i DONT want to cut down my thermal, does anoyne have any experience on exhaust modifications?

well if you used a test pipe you won't pass emisions, car be a lot louder, and have this funky smell but the plus side is you will hav noticeable power. with a cat you would pass emisions, but have less power then the test pipe, its your call.

he's not passing emissions w/ a drag3, even w/ a cat. why dont you cut it to fit the cat and if you want to run a test pipe then get a longer test pipe later.

you'll be surprised that DRAG can actually pass emissions on the sniffer just the inspecton is impossible to pass. He's in NY so i doubt they going to be that tough on the inspection, me and you are in CA so they are a lot more strict on us.

I doubt very much that there is an emissions test in Rochester, NY. I know there is in NYC and I beleive Westchester County, but I haven't heard of any other areas in NY with emissions.

I do recommend a high flow cat with you Thermal.

You will never ever ever ever ever ever make good horsepower with a cat installed on a turbo car. It kills spool and reduces efficiencies. Since your car is OBDII you will need to figure something out with your second O2 sensor to keep from throwing a code.

GGrahnVI - what do you consider "good" horsepower? What do you see as the horsepower difference in a..., lets say a DRAG turboed GSR at 8 psi, 12 psi, 18 psi? Do you have any dyno comparisons strictly changing the cat to a test pipe? While I do not I must say that I noticed NO difference in a street turoboed GSR at either 6 or 8 psi between running a 3" hi flow cat and a 3" test pipe. Maybe at higher psi the difference is made apparent. Also are you saying that while running a hi flow cat one would never make "good" power whether you consider "good" power to be 250-300whp? Basically I disagree with your statement. "Good" power is relative and as I see it, "good" power for a GSR at 8-9 psi is anywhere between 250-270 hp which one IS able to accomplish with a hi flow cat.

sorry guys, didnt mean to start a flame war........for the sake of my insanity......i think i am going to go with a test pipe, since i am sick of messing with this cat, ive had it to the shop more then 2 times now, and i DO NOT want to cut my beautiful thermal 3" piping......so i think i will just bite the bullet........

my next question goes out to OBII people:
can i just weld in a bung for my o2 sensor in the test pipe? will it throw a code, any experence or advice as to what i should do is greatly appreciated!

oh yea,
3" High Flow Cat with 02 bung welded in for sale........make me an offer lol

as for being in Rochester, you wont have a problem with a test pipe... i havent had a prob yet and my car is loud as can be... there are also no emissions here, so no need to worry bout having a cat...

as far as the O2 guess, you can get a bung welded on for about $20, but make suer it is in the correct possition... er you can do the simple solution which will say you time and agravation... pull the O2 senor up in the car through the hole in the floor... wrap the O2 in tin foil and then wrap that in a platic bag and leave the 02 in the car... with this set up, it will work fine and you wont set off a cel er anything and no need to get a bung welded...

FYI, there is a chance that a cel will go off if you do use a bung in the test pipe...

i just got a 3" inch carsound cat installed, and it feels way better then with the straight pipe. I must admit that my straight was pretty hacked up, some of the piping most of been 2".

nyb16
if it makes you feel any better this weekend during my install i totally cut my cat off. i just got mad at it and cut it off. it was actually in the way of my downpipe. so i figured screw this i'm just going to get a custom exhaust put on. i have the same dilemma about the straight pipe and i think i'm going to go with the straight pipe. i mean you can always get a cat later right.

thats the way to go with out any major mods and no probs with cel's... ive been running like this on my car since the summer and no prob. i got a test pipe with a bung in it, but if i mount the O2 senor on the bung, it hits the shift linkage and cant shift...

me and my car are in roch now... i goto school here, but i live down by the city, NY that is...

Can someone shed some light on me regarding OBD2 test pipes? What CEL codes do you get if you have mounted one? Does it only apply to a certain manufacturer turbo kit?

so can some one sum this all up?

IF i run a test pipe WITH 02 bung, i WILL or will NOT get a CEL?

bottom line, i am NOT cutting my beautiful thermal for this ******* cat, hell no. also, i dont have any flex pipe in place at the moment, im thinking this would be a great place to put some in, in place of the cat that is............

and hey man, if your in rochester, hit me up! id love to see your set up! and get a ride!

Anyone have any comments running a test pipe in an OBD2 vehicle? I'm curious if this is true or not. I run a 2 1/4" test pipe on my car/OBD2 and the only cel code i get is a random misfire which is normal to most greddy owners. I was wondering what kind of codes(if any) do you normally get in an OBD2.
