Wife wants more oomph out of her 98 DX, but I am weary of the auto trans standing up to a turbo kit. Anyone try it yet? Trans will be freshly rebuilt in the next month or two and if she refuses to drive stick.

usually if you dont do anything retarded with them, stock trans will handle 200hp just fine, just make sure she doesnt go around neutral bombing it or doing burnouts that could potentially damage the open diff.

200 if she plays real nice........seen plenty auto trans go buhbye with considerably less....routine maintainance is very important, change trans fluids more often and get a trans cooler.

My opinion is run a smaller turbo...gr17,14b,etc......shoot for 150-
170whp...it give her the oomph she wants without pushing it to hard

you can always get the converter rebuilt with a higher stall rate.

Slushbox's have a hard time dealing with stock engine power, especially if it's 98 or newer. I'd encourage your wifey to learn how to drive a standard and do an auto to manual conversion. Otherwise, I'd leave her car stock and tell her to get back in that kitchen and start making sandwiches!

since i have a fully built auto box pushing 300whp,i do not agree with the term slush box
200whp is the limit,seriously,the heat kills it so quickly,oilcooler is a good idea,redline synthetic oil is not an idea,its a must,never ever do neutral launching,,the trans can take some punishment but for daily driving its great for highway overtaking,make sure the turbo spools quickly,ems for me is oem doin the tranny and local management running engine

Freshly rebuilt and fully built are two different things though. Working in transmission shops for years now, I've pulled enough Honda/Acura auto units (stockers of course, with both 4 and 6 cylinder bone stock engines) to know that I'd never attempt to boost on a stock auto.

The only B-series auto I recall coming into our shop was in an Integra with a turbo kit on it. The shop had built the unit once before and it lasted about a year before returning with an internal problem, but the boss wasn't going to cover it because of the turbo kit. And of course the customer didn't want to pay for another rebuild. Other than that, the B-Series autos seem to be pretty stout. We did tons of Accords, Civics, Odysseys, Pilots, and CLs though.

Wow thanks for all the quick replies guys! I'm thinking 200whp is ambitious for her in a FWD car for sure. 150ish would be great in that little platform for cruising the highway and around town.

Speaking of built trannies, suggestions on where to find something a bit more robust? Or kits I can give to the shop when they do the rebuild? New to the Honda side of things..

I'm sure turbo kits will be easy enough to find.

i had a 00 civic d16y8 automatic and boosted it for about 2 years without any problems from the tranny. used a greddy kit at 6psi then later i run 8 psi. the motor gave up on me before the tranny did but im sure it was a lot of luck getting it to last that long. dont expect it to be super fast, but it was fun!

I also personally would never even consider boosting a Honda Auto trans, they are pretty weak and built to handle pretty much only what the stock motor can make. If your lady wants some go out of the civic then she either needs to learn to drive a manual or swap in a B18B1 or better yet B20 with auto trans and put a good intake header and exhaust on it.

I dunno about the strength of a D series automatic but my F series automatic is holding up well to 6psi. Torque is more of a problem than horsepower actually. Since stock D series are torqueless wonders, you might be able to get 170-180hp out of it. Just make sure you freshen up the trans fluid more often. And if you really want to be safe, get a trans temp gauge and buy a trans cooler. I wouldn't bother having it rebuilt or strengthened, you'll spend more money than it's worth and it's not like there isn't an abundance of d series auto trannys out there for cheap. I'd also recommend a small turbo for your application.... My $.02, good luck. Also, you'll find it's MUCH, MUCH cheaper to piece together your own turbo setup. Start to research, and looking into everything before you buy anything. You could easily do a small 14b setup on her car for $700-$800..maybe less depending on how patient you are, how many junkyards are around and if you do the work yourself.
