Building an engine for Vortech...ques???
Completing a rebuild on a B16 in 99 Si....my question for all of the tech gurus on this forum...I hopped in a read some posts but now I need some expertise...
Thinking about new pisons & rods...what would you recommend?? I was thinking JG pistons w/ 9 to 1 compression then Crower rods....does this sound like a soilid combo?...as far as the rings on the pistons--what do I look for? Do I need a blockguard seeing as I will need to up the boost on the s/c to either 10 or 12 lbs?...and if I do all this, could this car be daily driver?.....
..
I will reply and post accordingly...thx again in advance for all your help...Just thinking about the future life of my engine...

If you dont plan on going past 15psi, I wouldnt waste the money on crower rods, I have heard the Eagle rods are very good, and do hold up to their cliamed 600hp rating. As for pistons, JE seems to be the standard, and very reliable, so thats what I would go with. A Vortech SC, those look pretty badass, and cant they produce high levels of boost, like 20+psi?
JE, SRP, Ross, Wiseco all make great pistons. Some are more expensive than others, but in general they all do the job well. I personally like JE and Wiseco pistons! I have had no problems with them what so ever in both B18C1's and SR20DE motors! As for rods, you can go with Eagle or Crower; Crower being the more expensive of the 2. It is up to you as to how much you want to spend! Some people care for blockguard and some don't! I happen to be one of the people who think they actually do some good, especially when working on a budget. They halp the cylinders at their weekest point; up top when the most pressure will be in the cylinder. They are a very cost effective alternative to sleeving!

If I remember correctly the Vortec SC is makes more power as revs continue to rise....to what point I don't know, but I do know it is high! I would get some head porting done to improve high rpm breathing, and get some good valve springs and retainers. Rev that b16 up to 9000 rpms. The piston speeds will only be about the same as a b18c at 8000!!
Oh, also get some forged rods and pistons. Sleeving the block would also be a good thing to do too.
