Default $600 to spend at a machineshop

Ok I have a B16 engine at a machineshop
I have $600 to spend for major parts (pistons/rods etc...)

I want to boost it(6-8psi)

what would be the cheapest route to go with good parts under $600

maybe a good set of sleeves with stock rods or pistons/rods?

Considering you boost and the amount of money your willing to spend, I'd say go with tuning. However, since that wasn't the question you asked...rods and pistons before sleeves.

rods and pistons before sleeves. But hell i would agree with rondigs here, TUNING thats where my money would go for sure!

you dont need forged internals for that low of boost.
just go tune it like everyone else is saying.
but if you are definatley going to throw something in the block with $600, not sure
if you could get much.

lets see...ive seen eagle rods as low as $315 shipped
which leaves you with $285. not really enough to get you good pistons.
put in a little more than 600 and get at least some je pistons.

As I'm finding out, small items are going to nickel/dime you to death, bearings, seals, gaskets, etc? Do you have all that stuff already? If so, you may have to find some USED pistons/rods- $600 should get you by, that way.

i figured that out the hard way (the gaskets, seals, beraings etc). But With my setup i think i got away pretty good. I bought a set of SRP used pistons for 125 that appeared to have injested something and created some dings in them. I had the machine shop remove all raised spots and file down the edges a little bit and warrent them from damaging my motor (raised spots can become extremely red hot and cause pre-ignition). I purchased a set of NEW eagle rods off ebay for 300 shipped. I also found a machine shop a couple hundred miles away that had a block and some other parts a customer couldn't pay for so they sold everything to me for the remaining balance of $600 (darton sleeved motor, topline bearings and some misc gaskets).

Cliff notes for above: I ended up having a sleeved block, SRP pistons, Eagle rods, and topline bearings for a little over $1,000. Then had to buy rings for teh pistons, pay for teh labor, honing the cylinder walls, resurfacing the head, and other gaskets. grand total ended up being a little under 1800, still a great deal but I didn't think i'd be paying that much for gasket, labor etc. I hate to relate your situation to this, but st00pid boosted a b18b with a block gaurd to 20psi and made near 400whp (he might have actually made 400hp, not sure though).

I have no idea why i just told you my life story about my motor but the bottom line is, regardless of what pistons/rods you get, its going to cost you a whole lot more 600 to do anything. Pistons and rods aren't really even necessary for that boost level. A block gaurd and a couple hours of some conservative tuning could easily have your block at a low/high boost setting of 7psi street and 14 at the track.

If I was in your position, I would seperate the lower motion assembly (crank, rods, pistons, rings). Purchase a set of ACL or HONDA bearings, a block gaurd, some new rings, and arp head studs. Then have them install the block gaurd, hone the sleeves, and resurface the block. Then you'll have to get a new headgasket and put it all back together. It should come out to about 600 bucks.

Bearings - $80
Block Gaurd - $80
ARP Head Studs - $90
Piston Rings - $60
Hone 4 Cylinders - $40
Resurface Head - $40
Re-Assembly - $100
Head Gasket - $80
Misc Gaskets/Sealants - $50
===================
Total: $620

Before you purchase any parts, ask the machine shop how much they can get the parts for. My machine shop was a dealer for eagle and some other brands which i later found out. He could've saved me a couple of bucks, but oh well. Just shop around for the best deal and talk to the machine shop about cost of labor and all that good stuff. Communication about cost between you and the machine shop is such an important thing, otherwise they will dick you around hardXcore!!!!11!12 ahem ...

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I've been throug hthe whole "local machine shop" experience and i know quite a bit about it.

maybe I should leave everything OEM, rebuilt to OEM spec w/ turbo pistons

than spend the rest in tunning for boost?

hears my setup. ist ofr a d16z6 but prices should be close.

ACL bearings 90
ARP headstuds 90
3bar mapsensor. 45 all bought from camp1320. new.
eagle rods 285 shipped. NEW off honda-tech
CP pistons. .02 over, NEW 425 shipped.
880 shipped for P&P head, Crower stage 2 turbo cam, Valves, Retainers. B16a head should be around 1500-2000
Cosmetic headgasket, 90 NEW
Block guard, 55shipped, NEW
Machine shop work
Gaskets, complete engine kit, 159, from inline four
installation of block guard, bore and hone for new pistons, complete assembly, qoated, 600-800.

just under 3k, but it will handle 20+psi. and 300+ whp.

u could also run the stock head and save 1000 bucks.

if its already apart just do it right.

DAMN IT

my dad told them to go ahead with A N/A build ******* $1867 - 1917 plus RANDOM PARTS AND GSR TRANNY so it will be about $3k+ for this ******* b16 engine....

I could of gotten a JDM SPEC TYPE-R ENGINE WITH ALL OF THIS MONEY OR BUILT N BOOST MY D16Z6!!@#$@$#@#$@@$#@#

I got in a fight wiht him cause IT was HIS idea on rebuilding the engine, I wanted to replace the crused oil pan and oil pump than pop the bitch IN and boosted it OR rebuilt to OEM spec maybe TURBO pistons but instead im out about 2k for a rebuild I dont want.
