Default building engine in cold weather ? >>

it's like 10 here, if that.

does that weather change any of the Torque specs on the motor.

haha nice. i wish it was 10 here. -3 hurts when you hold on to the Tq wrench...

Personally I would build it in the living room. if you're doing it right there shouldn't be much mess.

im not putting a engine lift in my living room. haha.

i would love to do that though.

your prolly correct. i still dont want to build it inside my house. it's semi-nice.

so building in the cold is not recommend then or what .

umm. laundry room is not a bad idea.

i dont care about doing it in the cold, if it does not affect the build.

Bolts become slightly more brittle in the extreme cold.
Also, tolerances will definitely be slightly different.

Whether or not this will have an effect on your build, i cant say.
I will say however, that the aluminum door at my store expands when it gets cold.
So much in fact, that it sticks open and wont close. It usually has about 1mm of clearance around it when its summer time.

Yup, build it on the $100 stand, then rent a lift for one day, get a friend to help carry it out to the lift, then drop it in. Orrr just buy a $300 cycle of test, and carry it outside yourself

yea im worried about the metal expanding or not expanding due to the cold.

i dont really care about myself getting cold. that's what they make beer and liqure for.

id be more worried about building an engine on beer and liquor than in th4e cold

I would not build an engine outside in cold like that. I don't know how much, but cold temperatures will affect the tolerances in the motor. What is a good tolerance cold might turn out to be way too loose when it gets to be 70 degrees outside. Build the motor inside where it's nice and warm, or wait till spring.

so if i build in in the spring when its warm.

then when it gets cold wont the tolerance be to tight.

The tolerances listed in the helms manual, etc are set around a standard temperature, which is probably around 75 fahrenheit. When the motor is cold those tolerances are going to be closer, but that's why you let the motor warm up before driving it hard. If you build the motor cold and set the tolerances cold they're going to open up too much when it gets warm and **** can go wrong.

sounds good.

the motor is already built, i just need assemble the following :

put the head on block.
intake manifold
clutch and flywheel
oil pump, water pump, etc...

Well, the metal should actually shrink when its cold. In the case of our door at work, i think its more a case of the door frame shrinking, and the door itself "swelling" from the heat inside.

Oh. I thought you were talking about taking a bare block and assembling it. You should be fine with that stuff, but it's the piston to wall gap, ring gap, bearing clearances, etc, that I wouldn't do in cold weather.

yea, thats why i clarified. it looked like you guys might be talking about that.

so it's ok to put my arp's in and torque the head down to 70 lbs.

i also think my buddy has a heater i will make him let me barrow that will help out a bit.
