boosting my daily driver
The car- 1997 Civic EX, 187,000 miles. runs/drives/shifts healthy. body not that great. boosting it just because I want to. Always pondered it, .. picked this thing up as a daily, but i have another car i can drive while i have this as a project. Going with stock block, stock head, stock gaskets, and stock head bolts. i aint skeered. thinking 8 or 9 psi. Getting all of the little work done first, then i'll order my manifold/turbo/plumbing etc. still need to get a obd1 dizzy, and p28 socketed ecu. may go with hondata, and theres a tuner about 30 mins from here i'm hoping to hook up with.
pulled some stuff out.. a/c, air intake, exhaust, oil pan.
wiring up my 450cc dsm injectors with resistor box.
good mounting spot for resistor box
after alot of rubber gromet dremeling.. i got the 450s to seat in.
pan is out, took it to work to the parts washer and drilled a hole in it for the return. not the right size its too small but when the lines come in i'll know what to drill and tap.

Re: boosting my daily driver
Is this your first turbo build?
Don't rush things. PLan out 10 moves ahead to save money. Once you've done this a few time youll know what I mean. Drilling that hole before you even have a manifold or turbo is kinda dumb.
You don't know what the space limitations are and don't know where things are going to be, yet now you have a hole in the oil pan and you're going to fight with yourself to get that oil line to work and its prolly not going to since most lines go to the right of the oil pan.
what whp areyou looking to get? I would also get at the very least arp studs since you will be having the head off and single cams are known to lift.

Yes, first turbo build. you're right about the hole in the oil pan. oh well, now its my problem i have to deal with when i get a manifold and turbo. i'll make it work or get another pan. i'm looking for 180-190 HP. surely that's not too far from reasonable. the head bolts, i may change to ARP.. im not sure yet.. i've heard people boosting on stock head bolts without issues on these D series.

That my problem not yours attitude gets old quick around here.
Some more advice. You'll maybe get advice from other people who have been doing this for literally decades. Don't take they're advice with a grain of salt.
Have fun with it

well.. i didnt' say thats my problem not yours and I dont have an attitude. but anyway, i appreciate any helpful information i can get on here. i really didn't even want to make a post, i've been searching these forums for 10 years off and on gathering as much information as I can with various projects i've had. ive done a couple motor swaps etc. just havent boosted anything until this project.

Re: boosting my daily driver
So...you have no turbo setup, yet you already wired in your new injectors? I'm confused by that logic. I would have compiled parts until it was all ready to go before installing anything.
Another thing - set your goals in terms of whp, not psi. Engines break due to power creation, not the amount of boost thrown their way. For your stock block D series, you're safe in the 220-240whp range ... any more than that and the rods start to give out

Re: boosting my daily driver
Well after letting the car sit for many months I finally got the motivation to finish it. Got an egay Emusa kit and basemapped Ecu.
I know, ricer wheel will be gone. It was a cheap replacement for my shredded to the steel stock one.

Re: boosting my daily driver *updated with pics/video*
Some issues I've noticed are.
1. Wastegate is freaking annoying and loud, and no room for dump tube.
2. Overflow tank filled up (put on new rad cap, praying this is the prob)
3. Boost controller loud inside cab.
Other than that it's a fun car to drive
And glad I did the setup. My fav Honda is the Crx so I'd say once I freshen up the body on this civic I'll find a Crx to tinker with

Re: boosting my daily driver
ok just giving you a heads up im speaking from personal experience dseries are notorious for it. goodluck everybody starts somewhere next you know you're trying to go 10's
oh and your losing a decent amount of power by not having a dump tube, those expelled exhaust gases are getting sucked back in by the turbo.

Re: boosting my daily driver
Yea you need some sort of dumptube.
You'll start to notice that everything under the hood is getting covered in carbon and exhaust residue and that stuff will permanently stain and discolor both coated and uncoated metal.
Not to mention the 1200F+ degree exhaust exiting the wastegate is eventually going to melt your pressure signal line to the wastegate causing even bigger issues, as well as anything rubber/plastic in the way like the power steering lines and reservoir.
Not to mention you're beating on a car with a basemap, don't come back and complain when you break a ringland a week later.
And yes you were lifting the head. Stock d series headbolts are notoriously weak and stretch with even the lowest of boost levels. Keep doing it and eventually you're gonna pop a headgasket or something worse.
There's doing it the right way on a budget and then being a lazy cheap fucktard.... Guess which way you chose... Especially if this is your daily driver. Keep half assing things and driving like an idiot on a bone stock motor with a basemap and you'll be taking public transportation or pedaling your *** to work.

Re: boosting my daily driver
Your car has a million miles on it. I'm guessing since this was a lotta outta order you skipped the compression and leakdown tests( the most important part before deciding to turbo any motor). I will give you 5k tops with stretching head bolts and a basemap the way you've showed us you drive your car. Do it right once brotha and have minimal issues. Half *** it and have multiple major issues.
