Default boosting compressed air into atmosphere?

I'm installing my turbo today. Only thing is my charge pipes / fuel is not done.

Would the turbo hurt at all if it were to send the compressed air into the atmosphere temporarily? My friend says it might. Looking for other opinions.

why dont you just leave the wastegate unhooked so you dont boost?

BTW, if you send it into the atmosphere the air technically would not be compressed...

leaving a turbo open like that could result in over revving it.

Alright- I guess as soon as it hits the atmosphere it wouldn't be compressed. But leaving the turbo outlet..

So it can overrev the turbo? Would this only occur during full throttle or even just everyday driving?

BTW: my wastegate would just be sitting on top of the manifold without any vac lines connected.

Yes a turbo overspeed would be very bad. You are better off running the turbo to the TB with some temporary pipe and just keeping the WG open at all time. Otherwise wait until the intercooler and pipes are done.

It overspeeds because there is nothing to push against, restrict the air flow like there would be if the air was running through the charge pipes, though a intercooler, into the intake manifold, etc.

so what would happen to the turbo if it was over revved? because I ran my with no charge piping , but I granny drove it everytime i would hear it start to spool I let off. but its working fine now no problems. I would just like to know if by chance it did over rev, would the turbo be damaged and not work anymore?

leaving the up pipe off, or the wastegate disconnected, will result in over reving the turbo by this.
1 no up pipe.
no manifold pressure to open the waste gate to slow down the turbo.
and 2 is obvious.
no wastegate hook up wont open either.
if you arent ready to hang the turbo dont. it isnt worth the parts breakage.
oh and if you over rev it, too much it will come apart. centrifugal force usually wins.
