Default Boost Controllers

Allright...I heard that installing a boost controller to...well...CONTROL BOOST helps your kit run better and spool..."quicker"? Replying on the wastegate itself makes things run poo pooy. I've heard this now from a few people and I was trying to tell my friend this...well...he refuses to believe me...so please..INFORM ME WHY THIS IS TRUE!

Boost controller controls boost. I dont see how your "kit" would "run better" or "spool faster" with a boost controller.

A boost controller holds the wastegate closed until your desired max boost is reached. Without a boost controller, the wastegate will begin to open partially at a much lower psi.

Maybe with higher boost. But at low boost I dont here mine before 6-7 lbs which is what mines set at.

whether its $4 OR $600, most likely you'll notice it, even at the same pressure levels. Silverlude got it right, but you won't know til you try it.

So WHAT then, get it or not? It's one person yes, it's another saying no. Ahhhh.... I'm confused, anybody else?

So what you guys are saying is that a boost controller will hold the WG shut longer so the boost will spool up a bit quicker? The reason I ask is because I would like to see more boost in 3rd gear as well as earlier in 4th gear. With that in mind, would an Apexi AVC-R or Blitz SBC-iD be better?

yeah whatever get the boost controller so that you can use your 7lbs - 9 lbs more efficiently. Meanwhile Ill save the money to build my engine so that I can actually go higher than 7 lbs and then NEED a boost controller at that point.

A pal of mine down here has the D15 and its turboed. We talked about this boost controller thing and the waste gate partially opening before it limits the boost at 5 or 6psi ( what ever). What we discussed was using an msd swtich that you would use with a NOS setup. Set it so that it opens only at a set psi say 10 psi. so basically the waste gate remains completely shut before you hi 10 psi, then as soon as you hit it bang the waste gate opens and you maintian your 10 psi. This we suspect would give more efficient boost and better spool up times and down low power, which on my D16Z6 would be nice.

Considering you can get a very functional boost controller for under $50 and it will allow you to use your 7 psi for an extra thousand or so RPMs, I think it's a pretty damn good investment. Oh, and you probably don't HEAR your wastegate open over your other engine and exhaust sounds when you're at WOT and it's only cracked open 1/4 to 1/2 way, but you're losing exhaust pressure that should be spinning up your turbine. Without a boost controller the simple fact is that if your WG is all the way open at 8 psi, it's HALF way open at 4 psi. Springs are linear, there's nothing you can do about it except keep the boost signal from getting to the WG diaphragm until you want it open.

So, since a manual boost controller uses a ball and spring, wouldn't it act similar to a wastegate. What I mean is, will it let some boost pressure get to the wastegate at a lower psi than desired and also cause the wastegate to partially open as well?

The ball and spring is different because the spring applies enough pressure to the ball that it doesn't even crack open until your desired boost level... at that point, the ball moves, allowing the pressure to reach the wastegate which ideally has a much weaker spring... so if you've got a 4 psi spring on your wastegate and then set a ball-spring to not open till 10 psi, the wastegate doesn't see ANY pressure until 10 psi - then at 10 psi the ball/spring opens and allows that 10 psi (actually a little less since some is lost across the check valve) to hit the wastegate diaphragm; that 10 psi immediately snaps the WG all the way open.

Kinda simplified, but you can see how it works... just a side note; for any boost controller to work optimally you need the weakest possible spring on your actual wastegate.
