auto turbo question
I am having some issues with my teg. I put a turbo on it about 3 months ago. I went to the dyno and I put out 150HP to the wheels. I went to the mechanic to see what was wrong and he said that on the newer imports they have a "limiter" on the torque converter that starts dissipating the extra hp so that you don't break the tranny. I want to see what you guys think about it. Also on the dyno run I hit 150hp at 5100 RPM, I was still at 150hp when I hit 7200. Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Yeah man turbo and auto trans are tough together unless done right. Your best bet is to contact a place called Level Ten located somewhere in nj. I dont know the url but try doing a search for them. You need your tranny beefed up along with a trany cooler and a torque converter. One you get it built you #'s will be alot better.
Talk to these guys: http://www.levelten.com/contact.htm
they take a while to respond, but you'll get your answer eventually.

actually...i have a friend with a del sol with a ls and revhard kit and it is auto. he recently built the tranny with the level ten pts kit (heavy duty clutch plates) and he also got one of their converters. he only had it in the car after rebuild, for not even a month and it broke already. probably not due to the rebuild but something else in the tranny like the oil pump failing. he timed it in the quarter before and after and i think that he dynoed it and there was no difference...actually it may have been a tenth or two in the quarter e.t. my hatch was auto but now it's 5-speed. after running the auto under 8 psi for three months, it broke. it was diagnosed as oil pump failure. don't know what to tell you except honda auto's are not made to handle boost whatsoever unless you want to replace the auto every other month. it gets very very expensive unless you know how to swap tranny's, but if that is the case...do the conversion.
Common Mistakes!
The torque converter will not help you hold more boost. It will make better times because it has a higher stall speed and hardershift. The result is also higher temperatures. So if you are boosting with the torque converter, get a huge tranny cooler as well.
If you want your tranny to hold more power, levelten.com sells a transmission beef up kit for three hundred and something bucks. Sounds cheap, but the install will run you a couple hundred dollars. Upwards of 600 bucks for install!
If you are going to stay auto, get the tranny cooler and torque converter. Rebuild with the kit. That way, your car will be able to handle the power and get you better times. WATCH OUT FOR THE HEAT THOUGH, that is what kills your tranny 9 times out of 10.
Good luck,
Dave
