Default For anyone that has problems with bolts backing out... Problem Fixed

I've recently been having many problems with the bolts from my turbo to manifold backing out and causing big exhaust leaks. I searched and searched and tried many things and I finally came across a solution. Check out http://www.stage8.com and all you backing out bolt problems will be solved. They have any types of bolt sizes for ever application. Everything is made in house and prices are very fair. They also have great customer service over the phone and by email. They even sent me 3 free samples before I bought anything to make sure thats what I needed. Here are some pics of my manifold with the bolts. Tell them Lee sent ya F0rsfed@earthlink.net

for my manifold I used studs and copper crush nuts and haven't had a single problem. Just another option...

I've had endless problems when my turbo was installed initially. After each prolonged WOT run these bolt always fell off, even when studded with double nuts, crush/spring washers, etc.. u name it I tried it. Now I use special nuts (don't know what thay are called) that cuts slightly into the studs when you tighten it and problem solved.

How exactly does it work? Is it the triangle bit that prevents the bolt from spinning? How easy is it to take off and how much?

You get custom made bolts that have two 12 point hex heads with a slit between both. You get a a couple choices of retainers depending on application. Once your bolt is torqued down you put the retainer on closeiest to the manifold and over that there is an e clip that holds the retainer on. Fairly easy to take off with a flat head. I got four 1/2x13-1 bolts. That size is 6.50 each with 3.35 for priority mail. Well worth it since this would be all you will ever need. The guy I talked to Glen even sent me 3 free samples for free.

probably cheaper just to use studs and use nuts that are locking like the stock exhaust manifold nuts, nylocks, or ones that aren't round anymore.

I had similar problems, back in the day, but if you torque the bolts/buts when the engine is hot and use lockwashers, I'd wager you'd be cool. At one point I lost 2 nuts and one stud (of the five sets) that are holding on my wastegate housing, but in the ensuing year or so, I haven't lost any.

As a aircraft mechanic, why don't you guys use safety wires? All aircraft use safety wire their bolts to prevent them from backing out. You can buy or drill out a small hole on the bolts and safety wire them and it will never come loose.

Thats what I'll do...Where can you pick up high grade bolts with holes already in them? I lost one bolt so far...

By the way good find Forsfed

so you drill through the bolts AND drill through the manifold to safety wire it? I can't imagine where you would drill in the manifold.

He means you wire from one bolt to the next bolt with wire pliers making them a chain which will not allow them to spin loose because they are all connected. We have it done on our Gun Howitzer bolts. Great Idea.. I'd rather get bolts that are already made to do mine.
