Default adjusting ignition timing?

adjusting ignition timing on a b16a (00' civic Si) means moving the distributer to the rear or to the front of the car? A friend of mine told me it's moving it to the front of the car. I just want to know to be sure? Timing should be 1 degree per pound of boost correct?

I believe the amout of retard is determined by how much boost your going to run. I got the msd 6btm which comes with boost retard so it retards as you boost. But if i could add to this question with:

Could to much retard hurt your motor, i know to much advance obviously can but what about retard?

I'm actually only running the stock boost with the greddy kit which is what something like 5.5psi or so. I'm also intercooled. I just want to retard the timing a bit so I can be extra safe, even at this low boost level.

i believe too much retard can rob you of some power, but gives you less chance of detonation.

retarding base timing will rob off boost power but will give you the extra comfort in boost but with 5-6psi not to much to worryabout its up to you

At that boost setting I would run stock timing. If you hear detonation which i doubt you will if your using 92 octane then retard it about 2 degree's at most.
Also you shouldn't adjust timing without a timing light, get one of those and you won't need to ask this question.

to retard it you turn it towards the front of the car (clockwise).

Yes, it can, though the amount of retard to cause piston damage is huge. Typically retard just raises EGT, which is a bad thing.

is it really a bad thing? I keep hearing people say to retard your timing a bit in relation to the amount of boost your running to be safer???

Thats if you have a device to do it in proportion. Like a msd btm, or ems.
I've found on my b16, stock timing is ok up to about 6psi, above that you should retard timing about 2 degree's (up to about 10psi). I ran my b16 @ 9.5psi at stock timing. I used my crane boost retard to retard my timing about .3 degree per psi.

Wow i know this is going to hurt but, what is EGT.

take a deep breath....ok
Exhaust Gas Temp.

Why would it hurt? It was a simple painless question.

Imagine your exhaust valves glowing... melting...

The exhaust valves will cook far earlier than the intake valves because they never get a cool charge of intake air and fuel going past them. They only get heat, and heat, and more heat.

Arent you suppsed to advance your ignition timing when you increase the boost? i see people with 24* when 15psi and more.
