Default Using stock ignition timing w/ boost...

How many people here run stock ignition timing with boost? I know some people simply retard theirs a degree or two, and some people use the msd boost-retard controller. If running 94 octane, can you get away with running stock ignition timing as long as you are tuned well? Has anyone had problems with stock ignition timing under higer boost? My concern is this: I ran 7psi for 6 months using stock ignition timing and 94 octane gas. I was fine. Now that my engine is built, Id like to up the boost, but Im not sure if I can get away with the stock timing under higer boost levels. Im looking for people with personal experience using stock ignition timing and higer levels of boost. Please post your stories! Thanks!!

I ran stock timing on my b16a for a short period. I had a slight ping at 5psi and a little more at 8psi. I am runing .65 bar with 92 octane..I installed a boost timng retard so now the pinging is gone

Your gonna need to retard your timing once you get in higher boost levels. You might be able to get away with it in lower boost but i wouldnt try it in high boost.

Are we talking about the afc hack or FMU? FMU with stock ignition isnt that bad, but the hack is bad.

on a previous setup i had,i retarded the timing 2 degrees at idle and ran 22psi with 440cc injectors and an afc.it made 434whp with that setup.no problems whatsoever.of course i never ran over 15psi on 93 octane.22 was on 118

fmu has better timing over the afc hack throughout the entire boost range because itsp eak retard occurs at 0psi. The afc hack's peak retard varies, but is usully around 10-11 psi.

My setup was with stock injectors, a jackson racing fuel pump, vortec fmu, and v-afc. With my built motor, Im switching in some dsm 450cc injectors. I take it that if I want to run 12 psi, Im gonna need to either retard it 2 degrees or get a boost retard controller?

Go with the boost timing retard (trc-1 or btm). 12psi your going to need to cut more then 2 degrees. I highly recomend the boost retard. fine one used (i paid $65 for mine) it's definatly worth the peace of mind
