adding washers to Turbo XS RFL bov?
what exactly does putting the washers in do?
i have searched and people say its louder with more washers... but I want to make sure it is functioning right....
right now I have 5 washers in and the piston is still open a tad. should i add more washers?
Im running 9psi on gsr. I also have a vacuum leak that might be affecting this. My vacuum reads 17 at idle. I have a new intake manifold gasket that is going on in the next couple days.

Adding washers doesn't change the volume. Look inside the blow off valve, and feel the difference with the washers in, and out... it's self explanatory what they do.

I also have a gsr turbo with the RFL......You should have six washers that came with it. The less washers you have in it the easier it will blow off all the air at once. The more you have in it will give you more of a Boop Boop Boop Boop noise "supersequential" or bird call as i call it i. I have all 6 washers in all the time. Just cruisin around it makes the bird noise then when you get on it and let off it pops off hard as hell and loud as hell. its cool like that. if you feather the gas pedal it will make all sorts of cool noises. just play with. but yea you do have a vaccum leak. it should be at
-20. that can also effect the BOV functions.

this is a good informative thread, i was curious also, i never have my car longer enuff to know for leaks, my turbos always blow for some reason
but i have a built turbo LS and i run NO washers in the RFL and my vacuum reads -22/-23...is that cool?

should the piston be a little open at idle? or closed all the way?
-22 sounds good from what ive read. anywhere from 18-22 is normal.

i thought that is what the washers were for, so that it would be closed at idle, i guess i was wrong?
so since the bov is made to handle 10-25psi and i am only doing 8.7 i should have a few washers in? or it really doesnt matter unless I want it to sound different.... see what i am asking is what is the REAL function of the washers? is it good/bad to run too many/less washers?

i run 10LBS wit no washers.
who cares if its open at idle, its vacuum anyways, and when u accelerate and hit boost vacuum turns into POSITIVE pressure closing the BOV

adding or taking away washers only changes sound not the performance of the BOV. vacuum should be -20 no questions. the piston in the BOV should be closed at all times except when blowing off.

Re: (psycho_civic)
If you add washers it's going to close the BOV more at idle. Since its a universal BOV they give you washers with the kit because some cars won't idle right with the bov open at idle. I've been running mine washerless on my SOHC and its pretty loud. 1-3 psi it studders when it blows off and then anywhere after that its pretty damn loud. Question: Does anyone notice a big difference in the sound of VTEC at different PSIs? At 5 psi VTEC isn't as loud as 10 psi. J/c

Re: (Happyman)
Are any of you running a vacuum manifold, or is everyone using Tee's? My RFL will not flutter at all any more now that it gets a good vacuum signal. Vacuum manifold is the best $30-40 you will ever spend for your turbo car.
I run two washers, just so that it's closed at idle. Having it open at idle bothers me.

Re: (dunkd)
Sorry for my newbiness but can you exactly explain where those washers go? Maybe a pic would be good. I have the RFL thats gonna be put with my turbo soon and i want to know exactly what to expect and how to solve any kind of trouble that comes up.

the top of the RFL unscrews where the rubber pieces are. just grab the top of it and spin it to the left. not hard at all.

Unless it's different from a type s, you just unscrew the top part, remove the spring, then the washers and piston.
Start off with no washers. If the idle is off, then add washers until the idle is good.

Re: (B16A Grenade)
i'm running a RFL in the GTI, i think i used like 3 washers to get it closed at idle... that is the point of them, if your BOV is open it's like a huge vaccume leak, and OBD2 cars dont like vaccume leaks (throws a code on the VAG-COM)

Re: (B16A Grenade)
you just unsrew the top part, thats what the rubber o-rings are for, grip. you put the washers in between the spring and the piston. you want to have just enough washers that it stays closed at idle, dont add anymore.
