im a drummer. wish i really could play more, but its hard to get motivated to play with yourself . im kinda over being in a band, been there, done that. but i still love to make music.
to answer your question about heads. all the major manufacturers all make pretty much the same stuff....single ply, dual ply, coated...whatever. not one is really better than the others. i play remos just because they seem to be available everywhere. when i go in a store and ask for a 12" emperor, even the guitar clerk knows what im talking about. its all about what you like. if you get good heads and can tune it well, you can make a shitty kit sound pretty decent. just have to find what fits the kit and your sound.

I always heard that drummers were just frustrated musicians who couldn't master any other instrument. Is that really true?

I have a '60's Gretsch set. It has a great sound to it and it is very well built. I bought it off my drum teacher 15 years ago. It is very close to the picture below, but mine is a 5-piece.

As soon as my attic is refinished (half way there) I am going to buy all new cymbals and stands. I will still use the original Ludwig Speed King pedal. I love that pedal!

I'm a drummer. started as a guitarist, bassist. started playing drums a couple of years ago because the band I was in needed one.

I play a two piece Percussion Plus crapola kit with cracked cymbals. I f-ing love it!
