Default Transmission Build Problem

hey guys whats up im having a little bit of trouble with the transmission im building. its an s1 trans and i just put gearspeed synchros on it. well i put it all back together and when i pu tthe cxase on it goes all the way down but the snap ring for the counter shaft bearing doesnt snap into place its like just a sliver above the groove. im thinking i might have put the bearing on upside down would this cause that problem. the other thing that im having trouble with tis the shifter piece. everything installs correctly but it doesnt want to selece any gears other than 3rd or 4th it wont let it turn basicly so it can get 1, 2, 5, r so im stuck on taht too. i checked to see if the shift bar was down all the way and it is so im stuck i dont know what to do. i also made sure to check that the fourks were in neutral and they ware before i put he case on but after that when i try to turn the shaft in neutral it appears to be in first. im thinking this is all related tot he counter shaft but what the hell do i know . all i know is i need help.

Get the factory manual and follow the directions. You put something together wrong.

Flip the tranny upside down and lightly tap in on the ground. The snap ring should fall in place.

yea sal i did turn it over last night and it did fall into place like you said but i just wasnt sure if that was right, i was underthe impression taht the ring should fall into the groove on its own. and as for the people who told me to get the manual at what not. i do ahve the manual i did follow it and everything measured out to be in spec. but just to sum things up, its ok taht i ahve to turn the case over so that the snapring falls into place right?

Whatever works...usually you can use a pair of pliers and it will do the trick so you don't have to turn the whole unit upside down and tap it. Everyone has their own way

When you took the shifter mechanism out did you take only the 2 pieces with the shaft or did you unbolt it with the three 10mm's? If you unbolted it make sure all the "fingers" undernieth are ligned up correctly.

Also, when you put the 2 springs and 2 ***** back in did you put the washers on with the bolts?

Is the tranny in or out of the car?

hey guys i just want to say thank you to everyone who put in tehre advice. its kinda a funny story, it turns out atht i was jsut being over paranoid the shifter thing where i thought it was in first gear was just that the differentials spidart and side gears were a little stiff beacuise there was no oil in it when i bench tested and it turns out ahtt when i put some oil in it so it would turn over better it worded perfectly and as for the snap ring i just did wht sal said and turned it over and it worked perfectly. the tranny uis back int eh car and works well. thansk again for all of the help and support.
