problem with arp
i just put a new motor in my car with arp head studs....i was told to torque them in steps...so i did 32lbs then 52lbs then 76lbs to top it off.but when i go to torque it for 76lbs it seems like im over torqing it....like im turnin it too many time and it seems like the torque wrench doesnt wanna click....has anyone had this problem b4 and if so can u help me out....and even if u didnt have this problem can u give me some input anyways......thanks
torque wrench might be junk or the threds in the block might be giving up, did you use oil or there lube, there lube is thick and I always have problems with the stud binding, so i use plain oil.
your threads are gone, I had this same problem got the holes helicoiled, then those failed tried timeserts but they were too small for the hole and they don't make the larger bigserts in the size you need.
Theres a few things you can do.
1. Helicoil, all a helicoil is, is a piece of wire so they can and in my case have failed.
2. Timesert, a better choice than helicoils but you have to machine the lip off them b/c they are made for a flush mount, not inset like our blocks.
Downside is they only grab like 5 threads so theres not alot of insert holding your head down.
3. Custom inserts, This is what I had to do got some solid steel pipe with threads on the outside and the tap for the threads on the outside. Then cut pieces for however long you need and drill and tap the inside for the arp thread.
Then you just tap the block, clean, and locktite the inserts in let them cure over night and procede.
the inserts are a little tricky to make, so its something for a pro to do.
4. get a new block.
