If extrude honing worked that good, there would be no need for head porting. I would think it is about changing shapes, not just enlarging a port.

Not trying to be a ethug at all...sorry if it came off like that, you gotta take it with a sense of humor. Here, i'll buy you a beer ...anyway extrude hone has been proven to work on average improving cfm by about 25% and more importantly typically maintaining/increasing the VE of the port..if you dont believe that you could just use a search engine like AOLs or Altavista and look up "extrude hone heads" you'll get lots of hits with flow charts, dynoruns and such to prove it.....all and all extrude hone does work BUT its limited, its not for the ones looking for a all-out race head.

Hey Woofer,
Thanks for sharing a lot of this info...........I tried a few things you talked to me about on the phone while porting a 2002 Subaru WRX cylinder head.......it now flows 277CFM on the intake side and I think there will be some more in the seat area if I play around enough!

We are almost to 10,000 views fellas............keep it up!

Default seat work

This is great! Hey Woofer............

I just found 10 more cfm { from 276.7 to 287.1} from working the bottom area under the seat like we talked about.......this is starting to be a pretty healthy head now!

I'm thinking of adding some more volume in the bowl and see if this thing can reach 300! Any suggestions?

I think it would be a great thing to have a head porting seminar.......I'd definately come and judging from the response to this thread, I'd say a few others would too!

Hey Curtis.........I think I'm catching the bug...........I've been scouring the classifieds in the SCCA magazine for a FF or something similar! DAMN YOU!

Jim McFarland was my mentor when I was starting out. About a year after I'd completed my flow bench, Jim had a few interesting words for me.
First...and I still have his letter...."if you ever learn all there is to know about airflow, please share it with me".
The second also related to my insatiable desire to create the "best" heads...."keep your nose to the grindstone".
My nose is almost gone now and I still don't know everything about airflow!

WOW! Jim McFarland he has the original Hot Rod mag 67 camaro right, same guy?

Woofer, I have been meaning to ask you about my mentor but I am not real sure how long you have been around, He used to work for Harvey Crane back in the sixties when they did heads for all the big boys in racing he ended up marrying Harv's daughter his name is Charlie Kulp. I also learned a little from Greg Good from houston.

Oh boy THAT is encouraging! LOL

No seriously thoug, I have relaized that it takes a ton of hard work and dedication to get this stuff right........the secrets of airflow are not easily uncovered and it will consume most if not all of ones personal time.

I think it's the thrill of the hunt that keeps it exciting.......there is always something new lurking around that bend that can jump out and show you a revelation at any time!

If it were easy, everybody would do it!

I' never had an opportunity to meet Harvey, or work with directly with Charlie, but I certainly know of him. Crane revolutionized the cam industry, and forced most of the less-technically driven cam manufacturers to either give up, or step up their programs.
Back in the 60's, most of the engine work I did was centered around Ford powerplants. and Crane cams were my pick for most applications, as they had a trememdous selection of grinds available. I still have several of the old Crane catalogs that taught generations about cams and how-to install valvetrain components the "right" way.
They don't make catalogs like those anymore, and it's a shame.
I'm just about off-roaded out on my end. Our engine customers had an oil line break off in a race last weekend, so we're moving at break-neck speed to complete our version of a 1.625 liter B16.
Hey, Ben....has Art showed you the picture of the bearings from Michael Ho's engine yet? We just buttoned it back up because they looked like they'd never been run!

nice.
that's how they SHOULD look...........interestingly enough........I find that 90% of thre bearing damage I see is from when the engine was assembled with debris in the oil system.........even the tiniest particles can imbed themselves in the bearing and make it look like crap........you just can't get the engine too clean when assembling it!

But that's the advantage of using the Honda bearings too. Unlike some of the HARD aftermarket bearings, particles will imbed themselves in the bearings, rather than scoring the crank....

I'm with you..........I'd rather replace a soft bearing than a hard crank anytime!

Well in couple more hours, I'll be on my way to mexico for the Baja500....should be fun!

Then it's back to the flowbench and more work!

But isnt it true that the reason for a spun bearing is when it gets too shoft and it actually sticks to the crank? Like the 2nd layer is super soft and when it gets there, your in trouble.

Usally lack off oil is what cuases 99percent of spun bearings
that lack off oil can also be from huge clearance from result of excesive bear wear or of couse if ya dont have any clearance and its way too tight

Brad's right. If all's ok, the crank will never touch the bearings. That's why there's less friction with babbit-syle bearings than with needle bearings...but you have to have oil pressure to keep the parts apart.

and Ara went a 6.76 @ 204 at the extreme rush event at joliet. Ara said all the pro stock guys were on the starting line and were actually really impressed by the sport compacts. Hot Rod magizine is actually starting to feature the imports to , I think you can tell I am really excited about all this and had to share!

Hey Guys!

Just got back from Baja 500!
One of my customers won class 10 and was also 6th overall!
Unfortunately, the car with my engine and Autronic system failed to finish the race after having suspension problems and then losing an alternator, but they did lead the race for about 65 miles!
As long as I get new customers out of it.........I'm happy.......

Maybe now I can spend some time this week on cylinder heads!
