Default When to use a Cap?

I have 2 10s and some random amp in my trunk, I used 4 guage wiring, it was a kit on sale. I read about such setups killing the battery when not using a cap, at what point is it a good idea to use a cap in an audio setup?

You read wrong or what you read was crap.

Really depends on how much power your using.
If you're exceeding your alternators limits a cap will do nothing to solve this problem.
If your lights flicker and you have not passed your alternators limits a cap will help.

Didn't you read the above posts? A cap won't do anything for your system unless <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by nsxxtreme &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

Your buddy probably has a way more powerful system than you, but if you want to spend money on a cap that will do nothing, go for it. Go to a car audio shop and get the most expensive one you can find.

Yes a cap can and will "clean up" the bass response, most noticeably at higher volume levels, by supplying, [stiffening] needed current during high "burps" of bass.
As has been stated only a bigger alt. can supply more power, if the system is constantly drawing more current then the alt. can supply, eventually it will draw down the batt. and the cap, also keep in mind a cap is another load on the alt., [something else that draws power].

A properly installed cap, will help eliminate "disco" lights, [dimming lights] it will help bass SQ.

The debate over caps will rage on, [they work/they don't work], I know they work, I have been installing caps on sub amps for a long time [25+ years] long before they where available from car audio parts suppliers, [we salvaged them from old school computers] don't let anyone convince you otherwise, you heard the diff. in your friends car.

Look for 15V or more 1 fared cap with a low ESR, forget about anything with "digital" readouts, fancy graphics, gold plated anything, those things will definitely not help anything except the BLING factor. 94
