The two new boxes, waiting to be covered

First one covered in fleece, waiting for resin (cute huh?) Don't make fun of me!

I know it is not much, but comments, suggestions, flames, and tips are all welcomed.

Looks like you want cylindrical sub enclosures? You hsould have just gone to your local home depot and looked in the concrete section. They make forms for columns that are extrememly thick cardboard and are suitable for sub enclosures.

Many people in the HT arena have used them, and they have gotten the name Sonotubes.

You can cut them to length with a jigsaw, then add a front and rear baffle and you are done.

Just a suggestion that may save you a ton of work with all the fiberglassing.

There are bears on my box because that was the cheapest fleece at wal-mart.

Thought about the column ****, but they did not have one with a 14 inch diameter, which is what I wanted. But thanks for the idea anyway.

The fiberglassing isn't that bad. Started from scratch at 3 pm, and we were done with both of them at 7pm.

Now for the rest...making it all look good.

So what are the cylinders you are using made out of?

You can just slap resin ontop of that bear cloth?

I thought it had to be fibreglass mat...

MY GOD MAN!

Sick install, I was thinking of doing something like that for my crx.
Question:

Whats on the bottom of the box? Like is it more fibreglass or something?
Also how do you construct the basic shape of the top and get it to come out nice and round and smooth etc, doesnt look like it was done with wood.

I didn't build it, but I have followed the construction of it....

The bottom half of the box is all fiberglass - using the spare tire well as a mold.

Then the perimeter of the box is done in wood (see the flat areas), and the speaker ring was milled from MDF as well, then mounted with a few braces (you can see htem in the photo). Then the fleece was stretched over the top half of the box. Add resin, then some fiberglass, and a lot of sanding and you get that.

That's the quick explanation to it, there are more intermediate steps, but that should give you an idea.

I really like the shape of that box, it turned out really well.

The bottom of the Box is just a Fiberglass Mat that you lay it on the bottom. Its realitvly cheap but thats what we use. Its real easy to use just be careful on how much you lay down because that just means more you will have to sand down.

Questions are not addressed at me but...

That green stuff...it's 3M tape. When you glass, it's best to use tape that is not too tacky. When resin "goes" it heats up....all of that heat during the cure process will tend to turn all of that tacky substance to something the consistancy of snot. So, the green masking tape will come up easier from the car then let's say duct tape. If you don't have an air compressor to help, or you didn't apply PVA to the mold, then it's going to be tough to pull out. The less tape you use, the easier it will be to get up...that's why foil molds can work so well some times.

As for getting it in and out...it's no wider then your spare tire well...it shouldcome right out of the trunk. But then again, that's why all good installers spend 80% planning and 20% labor

Sorry for answering questions directed at other people...I'm just really bored tonight

oh yeah, one last thing...you really don't need any special tools to fiberglass. The only thing that I would recommend as a BARE minimum - a jigsaw. You could build that same enclosure witih a jigsaw, some sandpaper and some glassing materials - oh and patience.

I've painted plenty of parts with a rattle can, and although it's not as nice as paint layed down by a gun, if you wet sand it and color polish it, it can look pretty damn good.

The real reason I wish I had a gun - so that I could shoot poly primer!!! High build primer saves so much work!! Apparently, they call this junk in a rattle can high build - it sucks.

see, told you I was bored!!
