Default skipping headunit

i got an alpine deck that i had for about a year. the deck skips a lot whenever i hit bumps. this only happens when i play cd's. is there any way i can secure the headunit more so that it doesnt skip when i hit bumps? also, is it possible to replace the factory radio harness?

What Alpine HU?
MM&Y of car it's in.

It is crucial that the HU is solidly mounted in the dash for the CD transports suspension to function properly.

The other thing I would look at is if the CDs laser lens is clean, use a good quality lens cleaner in the HU, once it has warmed up

Not sure I understand, "is it possible to replace the factory radio harness" do you mean the stock radio plug was cut off when the Alpine was installed?
If so yes it can, [depending on MM&Y] you can pick up one of these... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...A02RB

Or one of these... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...A08RB assuming it's a Honda/Acura. 94

its been about a year and it could be the lens. but i also have a pretty stiff suspension setup and i mainly blame that for the skipping.

Use the stock rear support bracket, the same bracket the held the stock HU in place all tegs look pretty much the same where the HU goes, this is a g2 but you should get the idea... http://www.installdr.com/Insta...9.pdf
Scroll down to "remove factory radio" and you can see how the stock HU is held in place, it should be level with the bottom of the HU when HU is in the upper part of DD opening, it will have 3 holes/slots in it one of them is right in the middle a small "L" bracket level with the bottom of the HU, [just above level with the bottom of the HU if you are using install kit] 94

Link works fine for me. You need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed first though.

You will have to make am "L" bracket out of back bracing... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...D=BS9
Mount the "L" bracket to the back of the Alpine HU, [using the HUs back brace mounting hole (8mm ISO machine screw)] Have the bottom of the "L" (_) level with the bottom of the HU, or just above level (1/8") if using a HU mounting kit, something like this... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...1563B.
You need to download Adobe Reader to view the link so you can see how a stock HU is held in place. 94

Rides pretty good, but it's still 10k/6k lol.

I've gotten used to it so it's not a big deal

I bought a Sony Xplod CDX-GT200 head unit about 6 months ago, and not once have I had any problems with it. I had Circuit City install it in the stock mount, and I can literally hit every bump on the road and the head unit won't even skip. Its got great sound quality for its price ($120). What I use to avoid skips is getting a Sony Walkman portable CD player with G-protection (D-NF420 is the one I have), set it for the highest G-protection, then hook it to an auxiliary input. That particular CD player will load all the songs into memory, then read them from there, not only saving battery life, but further reducing the chance of skipping.
